In a recent interview with VTM Nieuws, Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that he is in talks with the club to extend his contract beyond the summer of 2023. The Belgian international said (via VTM Nieuws‘s Kristof Terreur),
“I am happy in Manchester. I am at a good club. Good owners. Good club. We are a bit in talks – not advanced. At the moment I am doing the talks myself. When you want to stay, it’s not so difficult.”
De Bruyne’s Sparkling Start To This Campaign
Despite a poor performance versus Liverpool earlier this month, De Bruyne has been a delight to watch for Man City this season as he put in a series of productive performances as the chief playmaker of Pep Guardiola’s first-team. The 29-year-old has registered one goal and seven assists in ten matches for the Mancunian giants this term across multiple competitions.
The Belgian midfielder has been consistent with his all-round contributions at the centre of the park based on his average of 1.7 tackles, 0.5 clearances, 3.2 shots, 3.3 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the Premier League this season. He has distributed the ball relatively well after making 79.1% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
De Bruyne is currently considered amongst the best midfielders in European football, so it is no surprise that Man City have begun talks to extend the player’s stay with the club as they cannot afford to lose him when he has still got plenty left to offer at the Etihad Stadium.
What Are The Belgian Midfield Ace’s Best Attributes?
De Bruyne has got a wand of a right foot as he can effortlessly create chances out of thin air for his teammates around him. He is an excellent playmaker as he possesses the vision to play a killer pass in the attacking third.
The 76-time Belgian international can also strike the ball with power and precision, which makes a potent goal-threat from long range and direct set-pieces. He has also worked hard in chasing the opposition down in midfield and can make some well-timed tackles as well.
Why Man City Need To Retain De Bruyne’s Services For The Long-Run
De Bruyne is a generational talent, so Guardiola would be wise to tie him up on a long-term deal if he intends to establish a period of sustained success at the blue half of Manchester. At 29, the ex-Chelsea player has still got multiple years left in his locker to play at top gear. Therefore, the reigning EFL Cup champions should try their best to come to an agreement with regards to De Bruyne’s contract extension as he could potentially be the man that leads them to their maiden UEFA Champions League win in the coming seasons.
