Manchester United faced off against Everton at Goodison Park earlier today hoping to pick up a positive result on their travels. The Red Devils made a sloppy start to the match and conceded the opener in the 19th minute when Bernard scored from close range. However, Bruno Fernandes came up with the all-important equaliser just six minutes later. The Portuguese international went on to score another goal in the 32nd minute to give his team the lead. The visitors hung on to their narrow 2-1 advantage going into the half-time break.
The Merseyside club tried their best to get back into the contest but were denied by some valiant Man United defending. Edinson Cavani came off the bench to kill the game off in injury-time when he found the back of the net with a clinical finish. The match ended with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men earning a hard-fought 3-1 victory away at Merseyside.
Let’s take a look at how each Man United player performed during the contest against the Toffees.
GK: David De Gea – 5/10
The Spaniard keeper could have done better to save Bernard’s goal. Otherwise, he was hardly tested at the back today.
RB: Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6/10
The ex-Crystal Palace full-back had a couple of nervy moments when defending in the first half. However, he recovered well and put in a solid display in the second half.
CB: Victor Lindelof – 6.5/10
The Swedish centre-back was at fault for not winning the header against Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the lead-up to Bernard’s opening goal. However, he kept things tight at the back and secured a comfortable clean sheet in the second 45 minutes.
CB: Harry Maguire – 7/10
The English defensive ace commanded his backline relatively well and did enough to restrict the opposition from scoring more than once during the 90 minutes.
LB: Luke Shaw – 7/10
Shaw delivered an inviting cross to Fernandes, who made no mistake with his header in the first half. He worked hard to stop Seamus Coleman’s overlapping runs but picked up an injury and had to be replaced after the hour mark.
CM: Fred – 7.5/10
He enjoyed the midfield battle against his countryman, Allan and came out on top on several occasions. It was another industrious performance from him today.
CM: Scott McTominay – 7/10
McTominay protected his teammates at the back and broke down some of Everton’s counter-attacks by mopping up the danger when needed at the centre of the park.
LW: Marcus Rashford – 6/10
The English attacker was a constant menace for the opposition and has got an assist to show for his efforts. However, he was far from convincing as he did not have his shooting boots on in the final third.
CAM: Bruno Fernandes – 9/10
The Portuguese playmaker was by far the best player on the pitch. He ended the game with two goals and one assist to his name, which is why he deserves to be named the man of the match.
RW: Juan Mata – 6/10
The Spanish veteran interchanged possession well with his teammates without creating anything of note in the offensive end of the field.
ST: Anthony Martial – 5/10
The French forward spurned a glorious opportunity to open the goal-scoring in the early stages of the contest. However, Martial never looked like he had a goal in him throughout the remainder of the game.
Substitutes:
LB: Axel Tuanzebe – 6/10
He did well to replace Shaw and fill in as a makeshift left-back.
RW: Paul Pogba – 4/10
Pogba offered very little after coming on in the second half.
ST: Edinson Cavani – 8/10
The Uruguayan marksman came on to score in injury-time which sealed all three points for Man United.
