In a recent report, The Daily Mail has claimed that Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso is on Crystal Palace’s radar. It is believed that the Eagles have eyed the Blues defender as an ideal replacement for Patrick van Aanholt whose contract at Selhurst Park runs out at the end of this campaign (via The Daily Mail).
Alonso’s Fall From Grace At The English Capital
The 29-year-old has struggled to earn regular game time at Stamford Bridge this season as Frank Lampard has often preferred Ben Chilwell in his starting XI. He has only participated in three matches for the West London giants this term, picking up one yellow card in the process across all fronts.
Alonso had a solid season with the Blues last term when he scored four goals and secured four assists in 29 matches for them in multiple competitions. The Spaniard managed to positively influence the game at both ends of the pitch as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 1.7 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per game in the previous Premier League campaign. He was also neat and tidy when distributing the ball based on his pass success rate of 82.6% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
However, Alonso has been criticised in the past for his defensive shortcomings as he is prone to making errors at the back. Therefore, it is no wonder that Chilwell has got the nod to start ahead of him at Chelsea this season.
What Does The Spanish Left-Back Bring To The Table?
Alonso is known for his incredible productivity from the left-back spot as he remains one of the most attack-minded defenders in the Premier League. He is not shy of having a strike at the goal when given time and space by the opposition and can create some decent opportunities for his teammates to score from the left flank.
The Spanish sensation can read the game well that helps him to pull off some crucial interceptions for his side. However, he can sometimes be caught out of position due to his eagerness to get forward, which can make him a liability on the field.
Should The Blues Sanction Alonso’s Departure?
Based on Chilwell’s solid form, Lampard does not need to keep Alonso at Stamford Bridge as he has also got Emerson Palmieri and Cesar Azpilicueta, who can also fill in as a makeshift left-back. Hence, it makes sense for Chelsea to part ways with the Spaniard in January or next summer.
Lampard can use the fee generated from his potential sale to strengthen other key areas of his squad. At 29, Alonso needs to ensure regular playing time, which is why it is only fair to the player if the Blues allow him to seal a permanent move to another club in the future.
