Borussia Dortmund stumbled to yet another defeat at the hands of their rivals Bayern Munich as they slump to a 3-2 loss at the Signal Iduna Park tonight. It was an open game with both sides more than willing to adopt a high line of press, with the home side getting the lion’s share of chances. Their poor finishing, however, allowed the lethal Bayern attackers to secure a late win, with Leroy Sane’s 80th-minute strike proving to be the decisive one.
Borussia Dortmund Player Ratings Vs Bayern Munich
Roman Burki 6/10
Made a couple of brilliant saves in the first half to keep his side in the game, but wasn’t helped at all by Lucien Favre’s tactics that allowed Bayern Munich to have so many chances.
Thomas Meunier 5/10
Thomas Meunier was clueless going forward and provided very little support to Jadon Sancho. Wasn’t exactly competent in the defensive phases either.
Manuel Akanji 5/10
Manuel Akanji was not helped by Dortmund’s high line of press that gave him very little chance against the mighty attackers of Bayern Munich.
Mats Hummels 5/10
Struggled to provide any sort of defensive solidity, which was expected due to the 4-3-3 shape that exposed his lack of pace. Overrun by Lewandowski and company.
Raphael Guerreiro 6/10
Raphael Guerreiro may not have been useful defensively, but the Portuguese international provided the usual creativity going forward. Notably provided two excellent opportunities in the final phase of the game.
Axel Witsel 5.5/10
It was surprising to see Axel Witsel start ahead Mahmoud Dahoud and the decision didn’t pay off for Favre at all as the Belgian couldn’t help Dortmund dominate proceedings.
Thomas Delaney 5/10
Thomas Delaney produced some delicious forward balls, at times. But, the Dane was quite ineffective defensively and looked sloppy in possession for the most part.
Jadon Sancho 4/10
Yet another disappointing performance from Jadon Sancho who continues to underperform against big clubs. Didn’t offer anything in terms creativity in the final third before making way for Julian Brandt midway through the second half.
Marco Reus 6/10
Marco Reus had a lot of chances to put Dortmund in front, but he couldn’t manage to maximise those situations. Defensively did well but missing a glaring opportunity to equalise didn’t bode well for his team, though he did score the first goal.
Giovanni Reyna 6.5/10
Giovanni Reyna made a host of runs in behind the Bayern defence and took full advantage of their line of press. The American also produced some wonderful chances but may have done a little better in terms of productivity.
Erling Haaland 7/10
Erling Haaland had an excellent game tonight. The Norwegian youngster worked hard throughout the course of the game and often looked unplayable even against quality defenders like Jerome Boateng and David Alaba.
SUBSTITUTES
Jude Bellingham 5/10
It was surprising to see to Jude Bellingham coming on instead of Dahoud. The Englishman didn’t provide too much aside from better ball-retention in midfield.
Julian Brandt 6/10
Offered more energy and dynamism in the final but to no avail.
Thorgan Hazard 6/10
A second-half replacement for Reyna – a move that should have been made earlier.
