As we close in on the return of club football, Manchester United are one of the teams desperate to get back on track, especially after getting mauled by Tottenham Hotspur in the last game.
Fortunately, the Red Devils were one of the busiest sides in the transfer market. And here, at The 4th Official, we will take a look at the strongest possible Manchester United lineup including the new signings.
Strongest Manchester United Lineup Including New Signing
Defence
Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer faces a serious dilemma in defence as none of the three central defenders in Eric Bailly, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have performed particularly well in these early parts of the campaign.
However, Maguire, as captain of the side, is an automatic pick, with Bailly getting the nod ahead of Lindelof, who hasn’t been competent enough this season. These two will form the heart of the four-man backline.
At right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka is an easy pick over Timothy Fosu-Mensah while new signing Alex Telles should get the nod ahead of Luke Shaw on the opposite flank. The ex-FC Porto star has a lot of experience, and his attacking qualities should add a new element to the United backline.
Despite Man United’s dismal defensive performances this season, goalkeeper David de Gea has not been a weak link. So the Spaniard should continue over Dean Henderson in between the sticks.
Midfield
Solskjaer has a lot of options in central midfield, especially after the acquisition of Donny van de Beek. Unfortunately, the Dutchman has no automatic place in the starting lineup, mainly due to Bruno Fernandes establishing himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the league.
Paul Pogba should start in a deeper role, but the Frenchman should be partnered by Fred, rather than the inexperienced Scott McTominay and the ageing Nemanja Matic, whose lack of speed and mobility could prove to be a problem for the Red Devils this season.
Attack
Anthony Martial has done a decent job over the past 12 months and deserves a spot in the starting lineup. However, the recent addition of Edinson Cavani means he might have to shift into a wider role, likely at the expense of Mason Greenwood, with Marcus Rashford operating on the opposite flank.
Greenwood, Daniel James and Juan Mata are all options on the bench, with Cavani spearheading the Manchester United attack.
