According to a recent report by renowned French news source L’Equipe, Premiership giants Rangers are said to once again be on the verge of signing Amiens’ South African midfielder Bongani Zungu. The 27-year-old has been on the Ibrox club’s radar for a couple of months now, and even though talks seemingly broke down, the links have now resurfaced. The reason for the Gers turning him down was touted to be because the midfielder was overweight. Now though, Gerrard’s man are reportedly back in the race.
Although the report has clarified that Rangers are interested in Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu, whether or not a deal takes shape this time around remains to be seen. It has been suggested that the parties have restarted talks over a potential deal and that an agreement is close to being reached. The South African is seemingly attracting interest from Turkish side Malatyaspor as well. Despite talks of a move away from the Ligue 2 side, the 27-year-old has already featured in two matches since the start of the new season.
What Is Rangers’ Midfield Situation?
The Ibrox club have one of the strongest rosters in the entirety of the Premiership, but one area of concern for Steven Gerrard will have to be central midfield. Not only do the Gers have a lack of depth, but some of the players that they do have don’t fit the bill too well either.
The likes of Joe Aribo and Ryan Jack have had important parts to play since the start of the season, but their recent spell out injured threw light on the actual situation. The knocks to key names forced Gerrard into making alternate plans, and not all of them seem like dependable options.
The two players who replaced Jack and Aribo in the roster are veteran midfielder Steven Davis and Finnish ace Glen Kamara. The former has been around the top of the British game for the longest time now, and his experience and know-how has been of importance. Despite this, Davis’ rising age will undoubtedly be a massive concern. On the other hand, Kamara is one of the younger midfielders that Gerrard has at his disposal. Despite his immense potential and youthfulness, the former Arsenal man has failed to show any level of consistency since coming into the side.
What Makes Bongani Zungu A Good Option For Rangers?
The South African is a combative midfielder who also likes to get on the ball and make things happen going forward. Physically strong and dominant in defensive situations, Zungu’s presence in the middle of the park will come as a boon to Gerrard’s side. As of right now, Ryan Jack remains the Gers’ only realistic holding midfield option, especially considering that the duo mentioned above cannot be depended on regularly. Zungu’s passing ability and physical strength will come as a boon to Rangers, who have been lacking in that department since the start of the new season.
Rangers Are Interested In Amiens Midfielder Bongani Zungu: Smart Move For Gerrard?
Thankfully for Steven Gerrard’s men, they’ve managed to keep with the pace being set by Celtic so far. Despite this, going into the remainder of the season with the same squad could be like asking for trouble. Their deficiencies in midfield have been apparent to see, and signing a player of Zungu’s quality would address that issue to a certain extent. Dynamism in the engine room is something that this Rangers team doesn’t boast in abundance, and if Zungu can give them that, then Gerrard needn’t think twice about getting this deal over the line before the transfer window slams shut later today.
