In a recent interview with Football Insider, former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson urged Liverpool to consider recruiting Danijel Subasic, who is currently a free agent after being released by AS Monaco earlier this summer. Robinson said, “Subasic is an outstanding goalkeeper.
“A top goalkeeper that did brilliantly for Croatia in the World Cup. I am very surprised that he is still a free agent. I thought somebody would have snapped him up by now.
“Adrian is out of form and his confidence looks shot to pieces.
“If Alisson is going to be out for six weeks, Subasic would be an outstanding signing for them.”
Alisson Becker is currently sidelined due to a shoulder injury but his deputy, Adrian has failed to step up and fill in his big shoes in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team this season. The Spaniard was guilty of committing some dreadful errors in Liverpool’s 7-2 loss at the hands of Aston Villa before the international break.
Subasic’s Impressive Career In French Football
It certainly makes sense for the Reds to listen to Robinson’s advice by engineering a move for another goalkeeper as soon as possible. Subasic has enjoyed a long and successful career at Monaco where he established himself as a solid performer. However, the Zadar-born custodian was released by the French club back in July when his contract at the Stade Louis II came to an end.
The 35-year-old has participated in 192 matches in the French top tier, shipping in 185 goals while securing 79 clean sheets. He has got the experience and pedigree to fill in as a decent second-choice keeper for any top-flight side in Europe including Liverpool.
What Does The Croatian Goalie Offer On The Pitch?
Subasic boasts quick reflexes that help him pull off some incredible stops at the back. He is usually quite good with his positioning and can make a few instinctive dives to restrict the opposition from finding the back of the net.
The Croatian veteran is not the best distributor of the ball and can sometimes be a bit untidy with his ball-handling when coming out to collect crosses inside his penalty box. However, there is no denying that Subasic has the experience and the know-how to flourish in English football even in the latter stages of his playing career.
Should The Reds Offer Him A Contract?
At 35, the former Ligue 1 talent still has a few good years left in him, so Klopp will fancy his chances of making the most out of him if he listens to Robinson’s advice by offering him a lifeline at Anfield this season. However, Subasic’s arrival could spell the end of Adrian’s time at Merseyside as the Spaniard’s confidence would be in tatters if Klopp decides to bring in another goalie to fill in during Alisson’s injury absence.
