According to a recent report by the Daily Mirror, former Arsenal and West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere has been tipped to prefer a switch to the MLS, in what could be an attempt to rebuild his crumbling career as a footballing professional. The Englishman, despite being touted for greatness from a very young age, has found the going quite tough over recent years. Having had his contract terminated by West Ham United last month, Wilshere is currently not associated with any club.
However, with Daily Record claiming that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side are interested in Jack Wilshere, what happens in the future is a question that only time can tell. Although the report has claimed that the Englishman has been on the Ibrox club’s radar, whether or not he is willing to make the switch to Scotland remains to be seen. Various footballing personalities have had their say on the matter, but the most prominent of them all was recorded by former Barcelona ace Xavi. The Spaniard tipped Wilshere to be a good fit for Rangers, and said that a move would benefit both parties.
What Would Wilshere Add To This Rangers Team?
The Englishman, from a young age, has been rated extremely highly for his natural footballing ability. Despite not being the biggest player in the world by any stretch, his ball-playing and technical skills seemed second to none in the Premier League. Having burst onto the scene at Arsenal, Wilshere’s introduction to the European picture attracted plaudits from even rival fans. Unfortunately for him, the prospective potential never took shape. Yes, he did have multiple good games along the way, but he never really managed to live up to expectations.
Injuries have taken their toll on what could’ve been a historic career for Wilshere, but with the right treatment and environment, he could still flourish. Despite coming into the Arsenal as a typical number eight, it must be conceded that Wilshere was always at his best when playing as an attacking midfielder. The ability to time his runs into the box and measure threaded passes have always been his two biggest strengths, with each of them boasting its own level of importance. More than fitness or quality, it seems like confidence is what the attacker is lacking, and playing for a manager like Gerrard could’ve given him just that.
What Is Rangers’ Midfield Situation Right Now?
Going into the Premiership season, Rangers didn’t look like they had the squad to challenge for the title. Over the last few weeks though, Gerrard’s men have thrown light on the situation. Not only do they have a flurry of options in all the midfield roles, but they actually have the quality in there to challenge Celtic, in terms of who has the best midfield roster. In Ryan Jack, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo, and more recently Bongani Zungu, the Gers are stacked in the central areas of the pitch. The addition of another name would’ve probably been surplus to requirements.
Steven Gerrard’s Rangers Side Are Interested In Jack Wilshere: Should They Convince Him To Not Choose The MLS?
With the Ibrox club currently sitting six points clear at the top of the table, the thought that they currently have a pretty complete squad would’ve surely crossed Gerrard’s mind at least once. Moreover, even considering all the quality that a player of Wilshere’s experience would bring to the picture, his injury-prone nature is something that must be taken into account. As it is, Gerrard has had to deal with a number of injury problems since the start of the season, and with his group finally starting to tick, the addition of another marquee player is something that they don’t need at this point in time.
