Manchester United have confirmed on their official website about the capture of Facundo Pellistri from Penarol on deadline deal. The Uruguayan starlet has decided to pen a five-year contract with the Red Devils with an option to prolong it for another year (via manutd.com).
Pellistri’s Outstanding Rise In Uruguayan Football
The Montevideo-born talent has established himself amongst the best young wingers in South American football after coming through the youth ranks of Penarol. He managed to make himself a regular starter for his boyhood club last season. Pellistri went on to feature in 37 senior matches for the Uruguayan outfit, scoring two goals and providing four assists across all competitions.
The 18-year-old is primarily a right-sided wide player but is also versatile enough to play on the left-wing if required. He has shown plenty of glimpses of what he is capable of from the wide positions but needs to continue playing more often if he wants to become a prolific attacker in the future.
At such a tender age, Pellistri has already managed to taste football in the Copa Libertadores, so he won’t be afraid of the spotlight when he gets a chance to play for Man United in the future. However, there are some serious concerns over whether he will be able to adapt to the physicality and high intensity of football in the Premier League.
What Will The Uruguayan Starlet Bring To The Theatre Of Dreams?
Pellistri can use his electric pace and agility to make a few dangerous runs with the ball down the right flank. He is not shy of working his socks off for the benefit of his side. The Uruguayan wonderkid has also got a great leap in him that allows him to win some 50-50 aerial duels in the opposition half. Standing at 1.74m, the Penarol youth product can get brushed off the ball too easily which is why he needs to work on improving his upper body strength so that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can consider including him in his first-team plans, especially in the cup competitions.
Is Pellistri A Star In The Making?
Pellistri has shown some real promise during his time in Uruguay, but he might need some time to settle into life in England. Therefore, the Red Devils will have to nurture him in their academy before allowing him a chance to fight for the right to start regularly at Old Trafford in the coming seasons.
At the moment, Pellistri is still quite raw, but with time, he could potentially become a success story in English football. If he is willing to work hard in developing himself in the training ground, then he could be a prospect to look out for in the future.
