In a recent interview (via The Daily Mail), Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne provided an update on his future and said, ‘I am very happy at Manchester City but I can say that until now I have not spoken once to the club (about a new contract) so I don’t know where people say I have already agreed to something.
‘I think I always told people that I am really happy at the club and feel comfortable so if the people there want to talk to me, I am open to that. Until then, we’ll see what happens because until now, nothing has happened.’
The Belgian international’s latest revelation about how he is open to start talks over a new contract will be music to Pep Guardiola’s ears. The Man City head coach needs to retain De Bruyne’s services for the long-run if he wants to win even more trophies in the years to come.
De Bruyne’s Incredible Record At The Etihad Stadium Last Season
The Drongen-born talent was named the PFA Player of the Year last season for his incredible consistency in terms of goal-scoring and creativity in the opposition half. He registered 16 goals and 23 assists in 48 matches for Man City in the previous campaign across all fronts.
De Bruyne deserves a lot of plaudits for his all-round contributions in midfield as evident from his average of 1.3 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 2.8 shots, 3.9 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. The 29-year-old even interchanged possession well at the centre of the park after completing 81.5% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
What Are The Belgian International’s Greatest Strengths?
De Bruyne is considered as one of the best midfielders of this generation as he has got everything in his game to be a constant menace for the opposition. He has a wide range of passes in his locker and can orchestrate some promising goal-scoring opportunities in the final third.
The 75-time Belgian international is also a pure striker of the ball and can score goals consistently from midfield at the highest level. He has by far been the best player in Pep Guardiola’s squad over the past couple of seasons but is still waiting to win his first UEFA Champions League with the Mancunian outfit.
Why Guardiola Needs To Tie De Bruyne Down To A New Contract?
De Bruyne’s current deal at the Etihad Stadium runs out in the summer of 2023, so there is still plenty of time for Man City to offer him a new contract extension. Based on his recent contributions, Guardiola would be wise to tie the Belgian down to a fresh deal so that he can spend his best years playing for the Mancunian giants week in week out.
