According to a recent interview conducted by Football Insider, former striker Noel Whelan has been blown away by the prospect of Rangers signing Sheffield United’s midfield star John Lundstram this summer. The report suggests that the Gers’ interest in the Englishman was confirmed by Alan Nixon of The Sun on Sunday, as Lundstram has now entered the final year of his current contract with the Blades. The Ibrox club have been unusually active in the transfer market so far this window, and it would be surprising if they didn’t make any more signings before it slams shut later this year.
Although the report has clarified that Whelan tips John Lundstram to be a great signing for Rangers, whether or not this deal is achievable remains to be seen. Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds United man said, “It would be a brilliant signing. He was a revelation last season in the Premier League and has been fantastic during his time at Sheffield United. He has put his name out there in the Premier League. That would be a fantastic signing if Rangers can get that one over the line and get a deal done. It would be exciting for the player as well because he would get to play in Europe. You can see now the pull of the big two in Scotland.”
What Is Rangers’ Current Midfield Situation?
The Ibrox club have managed to make various improvements to the team since the start of the transfer window, but there are still a couple of issues that will likely need to be addressed.
The signing of Leon Balogun has added a sense of security to the Gers’ back-line, while the big-money acquisitions of Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten have provided Gerrard with the necessary attacking reinforcements as well. Having brought in Ianis Hagi for creativity too, it’s safe to say that the Teddy Bears are gradually pacing towards a well-rounded squad.
Despite these additions though, central midfield is one area that Gerrard will have to try and strengthen in the coming week. Ryan Jack and Steven Davis are available as options for the pivot role, of which the gaffer tends to prefer utilising just one. Joe Aribo has managed to capture the imagination since the start of the campaign. Apart from the names above though, there is a lack of quality that runs through the side. Glen Kamara and Scott Arfield have both been average so far and bringing in a consistent performer who can fill that role would be massive for the Ibrox club.
What Makes John Lundstram A Good Target For Rangers?
The Englishman was one of the biggest surprise packages of the season, having been an important member of Chris Wilder’s highly effective setup at Bramall Lane. Capable of operating across a variety of roles, the midfielder is adept at getting a hold of the ball in the middle of the park and deciding on the next course of play. Usually dependable with his forward passing and movement, Lundstram would add something fresh to this Gers roster. A strong finisher of the ball as well, the 26-year-old would be a stellar investment from a financial perspective as well.
Whelan Tips John Lundstram To Be A Great Signing For Rangers: Should Gerrard Go For It?
The Premiership leaders have been blessed with a quite sensational defensive record since the start of the season, even without the presence of Leon Balogun at the back. With not a single goal conceded after six weeks of action, Steven Gerrard’s men will be confident of their chances of beating Celtic to the title this season. With various additions in multiple areas already in place, midfield remains the one aspect that needs further attention. Although it won’t be an easy task by any stretch, signing a player of Lundstram’s quality could be the perfect boost for them to stay atop the league table till the end of the season.
