According to AS, as cited by Express, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Lucas de Vega. They have already tabled a £2 million bid to sign the Barcelona youngster, who is yet to feature in the first-team. De Vega currently plays for Barcelona B but is regarded as one of the biggest prospects in La Masia. The player does also have a £90 million release clause but is reportedly keen on a move away from Camp Nou in search of game-time.
Who is Lucas de Vega?
A part of La Masia academy since an early age, de Vega is a central midfielder by trade. He has been making waves in the youth competitions for quite some time now and has played for Barcelona in UEFA Youth League. Even the club hierarchy is keen on grooming the youngster for the senior side in the upcoming season.
It doesn’t come as a surprise either as the Brazilian bears a resemblance to Ivan Rakitic in terms of his ball-retention. He is also blessed with technical prowess and neat footwork, as one would expect from any La Masia product.
Indeed, de Vega can pick up balls in midfield and act as a ball-carrier in half-spaces. It becomes quite useful in a possession-based system where the opposition generally tends to defend in deep block.
However, what makes the 20-year-old such an appealing prospect is his work-rate. Aside from his technical prowess, de Vega has the willingness and the tenacity to win back possession for his team.
He is also quite dynamic, which makes him a significant outlet on the counter as the midfielder likes to provide direct passes after creating turnovers in the middle of the park.
Is He A Good Option For Tottenham?
De Vega is not someone who could instantly provide first-team quality to Tottenham Hotspur this summer. However, his potential addition to the club could be considered as a step in the right direction as Jose Mourinho looks to integrate more young players into the first-team.
At Spurs, de Vega can compete with Harry Winks and perhaps even Tanguy Ndombele, if the latter ends up remaining in north London this summer. The Brazilian has already shown that he is equipped with the qualities that could help him thrive in any European club and could be a smart investment for the Lilywhites.
Especially under Mourinho, de Vega’s ability to create turnovers and navigate the ball effortlessly tune in well with the Portuguese tactician’s counter-attacking style of football.
Although the Barcelona youngster has no experience at the highest level of football, he is someone Tottenham should gamble given the current financial climate that has crippled the club’s powers in the transfer market.
