According to The Sun, Tottenham are among clubs monitoring Darwin Nunez. The UD Almeria forward has been listed as one of the potential options as Jose Mourinho looks to sign a back-up for Harry Kane this summer. Spurs, however, are set to face stiff competition from fellow Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion in the pursuit of Nunez, who is expected to cost around £15 million.
Darwin Nunez’s Rapid Rise To Prominence
Nunez was already regarded as one of Uruguay’s most talented young forwards when he moved to Almeria last summer, in a €7.5 million move from Penarol. He didn’t disappoint either, becoming a lethal attacking weapon for his new club.
In fact, the 21-year-old netted an astonishing 16 goals in 30 matches for Almeria in the Segunda Division. Although it wasn’t enough to help his club earn promotion back to the Spanish top-flight, Nunez’s individual performances have already raised a lot of eyebrows.
Nunez’s impressive display notably earned him his first cap for the Uruguayan national side. He could have made more appearances for his country had it not been for the Coronavirus pandemic.
What Can He Bring To The Table?
Much like his compatriot, Luis Suarez, Nunez is a predatory striker. He has the tendency to be at the right place at the right time, which is combined with a splash of technical brilliance that allows him to also act as a ball-carrier and link-up with his teammates in the final third.
The Artigas native has an imposing 1.87m frame as well. It gives him a considerable advantage in terms of both aerial and physical duels.
However, what makes Nunez such a lethal striker is his vicious right foot that enables him to even score from long-range. Also, his blistering pace makes it almost impossible for defenders to catch up with him, thus explaining his exploits in the Segunda Division last season.
Why Nunez Is A Perfect Option For Tottenham
Although Tottenham are merely involved in the race, signing a player like Nunez could turn out to be a masterstroke by Jose Mourinho.
The Uruguayan international, though inexperienced at the highest level of football, has already shown what he is capable of. He is equipped with the ideal set of characteristics that could help the striker thrive in the fast-paced and physically astute nature of the Premier League.
More importantly, the Almeria forward, at the age of just 21, has time on his side and can improve a lot, especially under Mourinho, who favours strikers of his breed. Nunez, therefore, could be an ideal back-up for Harry Kane at Tottenham next season.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not the player will be willing to switch to north London, knowing the fact that Spurs will not be able to guarantee him regular game-time.
