Real Madrid have commenced their 2020/20 Primera Divison campaign in the most unfavourable way with only a single point to take home from their trip to San Sebastian to square off against Real Sociedad.
Zidane’s men seemed to be short of ideas and did not really make the most of their chances on the night. The hosts, Sociedad held onto the game until the end and even posed a threat for Los Blancos on a couple of occasions. Zidane will be disappointed with the result and would have expected his side to bag home all the three points on offer.
There were a few talking points from the match in terms of controversy as Ferland Mendy miraculously avoided a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge. Had the Frenchman been sent off, it could have made things far easier for Imanol Alguacil’s side.
Here’s how Los Blancos were rated from the Matchday 1 La Liga fixture.
Real Madrid Players Rated In Unfortunate Draw Vs Real Sociedad
Thibaut Courtois – 8/10
Courtois was drawn into the game all of a sudden as he made a crucial save in the dying stages of the first half. The Belgian kept the Sociedad attack at bay throughout the night and held onto a clean-sheet.
Dani Carvajal – 7/10
A lively and energetic performance from Carvajal down the right flank. The Spaniard would want to work on his crosses and deliveries into the box.
Raphael Varane – 9/10
A commanding display from Varane against Real Sociedad as he deservedly earned himself the Man of the Match title.
Sergio Ramos – 8/10
Sergio Ramos was rock-solid in defence. The Whites captain displayed his years of experience with a few calm decisions made by him in pressure situations.
Ferland Mendy – 7/10
The Frenchman put a good show in defence but seemed a bit slow to the pace of the game in the attacking third.
Luka Modric – 7/10
The Croatian was substituted in the second half and made way for Federico Valverde. Much more was expected out of Modric on this occasion, and he failed to deliver the goods.
Toni Kroos – 7/10
Kroos was instrumental in midfield and kept the game ticking for Zidane’s side. Kroos also had a couple of attempts on goal which were parried away.
Martin Odegaard – 8/10
The midfielder had a lively evening and was amongst the best Los Blancos performers at the Anoeta Stadium.
Rodrygo – 7/10
Rodrygo had an average evening and seemed to be lacking match fitness. His final product was not really up to the mark and was taken off around the hour mark.
Karim Benzema – 7/10
The Frenchman seemed a bit off shade and certainly did not carry forward his splendid form of the last term into the 2020/21 La Liga season.
Vinicius Jr – 7/10
The Brazilian made a couple of impressive runs down the left flank and kept the La Real defence guessing. However, Vinicius did not have a decisive impact on the fixture.
Substitutes
Casemiro – 6/10
The defensive midfielder did not really have much to do post his arrival.
Federico Valverde – 7/10
An energetic and lively appearance from Valverde in midfield as he tried to push Real Madrid across the line.
