According to Mirror, Manchester United are gunning for a move on Kalidou Koulibaly. The Red Devils are adamant on signing the Napoli defender as Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer looks to add more quality in the defensive department. Koulibaly is aware of United’s interest and is open to a move to Premier League, although it remains to be seen whether or not the club can afford his hefty £90 million price-tag.
What Does Koulibaly Add To The Table?
Koulibaly is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe. He has been overly consistent with Napoli over the past three-four years and has established himself as the pillar of the Partenopei defence.
While the Senegalese international is often lauded for his immense physical and aerial prowess, he has been one of the best students of Italian tactician Maurizio Sarri. So essentially, the ex-Metz defender has mastered the art of passing from the back.
Indeed, Koulibaly has honed with his technical qualities over the years and is blessed with remarkable passing awareness. He is also capable of threading long and accurate diagonal balls, making it easier for his side to navigate through the transition game.
However, one thing that is often overlooked is his masterful tackling and an ability to read the game. It complements his imposing physical frame and a brilliant range of passing, making him one of the most well-rounded defenders in world football.
Where Does Koulibaly Fit In At United?
Solskjaer’s urgency to sign a new central defender, no doubt, stems from the potential departure of Chris Smalling. The English international is widely expected to permanently join AS Roma, following a successful loan spell last season.
Smalling’s departure could create a massive void in the defensive unit. Also, Eric Bailly has struggled with fitness problems while Marcos Rojo faces an uncertain future at the club. It leaves Solskjaer with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof as the only two reliable central defensive options.
In doesn’t bode well for the team, especially given the strenuous footballing schedule and that is where Koulibaly comes into the fray. The Senegalese international can be a direct replacement for Smalling, who can provide an incentive for both Lindelof and Maguire to fight for their respective places in the starting lineup.
Koulibaly’s wealth of experience at the highest level of football could also aid the United defence as they look to challenge the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the upcoming season.
