Spanish news outlet AS has reported that Manchester United have launched a move for Real Madrid full-back Sergio Reguilón recently after they identified him as an ideal option to strengthen their defence this summer. It is believed that the Spanish talent is tempted to make a switch to Old Trafford. Still, the Red Devils can expect to face fierce competition from Juventus, Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur and Sevilla in pursuit of the player during this summer transfer window (via AS).
Reguilon’s Eye-Catching Loan Stay At The Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium
The Madrid-born defender enjoyed a splendid loan spell at Seville last season where he managed to produce a run of consistent performances on the left side of Julen Lopetegui’s defence. Reguilon made 38 appearances for the Spanish outfit in the previous campaign, netting three goals and grabbing five assists in various competitions.
The Real Madrid youth product caught the eye by making himself useful at both ends of the pitch. He ended the season with an average of 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per match in La Liga and the UEFA Europa League last season. Reguilon did well to complete 81.6% of his attempted passes in both those competitions which goes to show how accurate he can be when interchanging possession with his teammates down the left flank (stats via whoscored).
The 23-year-old managed to help Sevilla win the Europa League trophy last month as they beat Inter Milan by an entertaining 3-2 scoreline to emerge victorious in the competition for the sixth time in their history. It was quite an achievement for Lopetegui’s men which would give Reguilon a lot of confidence heading into the new campaign.
What Will The Spanish Left-Back Bring To The Table?
Reguilon is proficient at making some energetic runs on the left-wing using his quickness and agility to get to the byline so that he can deliver some inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box. He has established himself as a reliable defensive presence inside his half as he is a decent 1v1 defender who is not afraid to back away from a challenge.
The Spaniard loves a tackle and can make some vital interceptions and last-gasp clearances for his team. Plus, he possesses the ability to generate some promising goal-scoring opportunities in the final third which has made him such a valuable member of Lopetegui’s first-team last season.
Is Reguilon The Right Choice For The Red Devils?
Reguilon could add more depth to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad as he will be able to provide some healthy competition for both Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams at the Theatre of Dreams next season. He will also instil a winning mentality to the Man United dressing room.
At 23, the Spanish full-back can be a positive influence in both halves of the field, but there are a few questions marks over whether he would be able to cope with the physical and high intense nature of English football. With all things considered, Reguilon will be an excellent choice for the Red Devils this summer and could help them compete for some major silverware in the years to come.
