Leicester City caused one of the first upsets of the new Premier League campaign by securing a thumping 5-2 win over Manchester City. The Foxes were pegged back early though a sixth-minute stunner from Riyad Mahrez, but Jamie Vardy hat-trick, as well as goals from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans, sealed a memorable win for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
Leicester City Player Ratings Vs Manchester City
Kasper Schmeichel 6/10
Kasper Schmeichel had no chance to save any of the two goals scored by Manchester City this evening.
Timothy Castagne 9/10
Timothy Castagne continues the amazing start to his Premier League career by putting up yet another impressive performance. He was a key attacking outlet on the right flank, notably providing the assist for Vardy’s second goal.
Daniel Amartey 7.5/10
Filling in for Wilfred Ndidi, Daniel Amartey did a decent job of providing support to his defensive teammates. His physical and aerial prowess proved to be helpful for the Foxes.
Jonny Evans 8/10
Led the Leicester City backline by example with some top-notch tackles throughout the game. Unfortunately, the ex-Man United defender picked up a late knock that forced him to be substituted.
Caglar Soyuncu 8.5/10
Yet another commendable defensive effort from Caglar Soyuncu, whose fearlessness, aggression and strength made it difficult for Manchester City to break down the Leicester defence.
James Justin 7.5/10
The young James Justin may not have been as influential as Castagne on the opposite flank. However, the Englishman was competent when dealing with the Man City attackers and moved forward well, using his blistering pace.
Dennis Praet 7.5/10
Excellent dummy movement to attract Benjamin Mendy to press him, allowing Castagne acres of space in behind as the Belgian eventually found Jamie Vardy for the second goal. A smart performance from the ex-Anderlecht starlet.
Youri Tielemans 9.5/10
Youri Tielemans was one of the best performers this evening. He created a formidable midfield partnership alongside Nampalys Mendy, but it was his ability to read the game, combined with some excellent forward passes that made Leicester quite dangerous on the counter. Also scored the final goal through a well-taken penalty.
Nampalys Mendy 8.5/10
Mendy’s discipline and understanding with Tielemans played a key role in preventing the Manchester City midfielders from dominating this fixture, especially with Ndidi missing from the starting lineup.
Harvey Barnes 7.5/10
Harvey Barnes was not always involved in the proceedings. However, the winger was always a menace for the opposition on the counter and most notably provided the pass to Vardy that led to the first penalty.
Jamie Vardy 10/10
Scored his second hat-trick against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, showing remarkable intelligence, speed and efficiency. Won both the penalties that he scored while a delightful finish saw him net the second goal. Man of the match.
