According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has tipped Alfredo Morelos’ future at the Ibrox to be in his own hands. Despite hinting on occasion that he could still be here for the remainder of their season, Gerrard admitted that the final decision could come down to the player himself and his representatives. Having been the subject of a variety of transfer rumours over the last couple of months, Morelos’ involvement in the first-team picture has reduced considerably since last season.
Although the report has recorded Gerrard admitting Alfredo Morelos could remain a Rangers player, whether or not the striker decides to leave remains to be seen. When asked if Morelos could stay in Glasgow, Gerrard said, “Of course there is still a possibility because no one knows what’s going to happen in the coming days and weeks. I said a few weeks back that in my situation, you just take each day as it comes. The good thing is Alfredo is playing well, he’s in much better shape, he’s looking sharper, he’s scoring goals. I think that’s a question for Alfredo and his representation to answer, rather than myself.”
What Is Rangers Current Squad Situation?
The Ibrox club have been the subject of multiple injuries in recent weeks, and this has made the weekly team selection process an extremely strenuous one for the manager. The likes of Joe Aribo, Brandon Barker and Ryan Jack are still sidelined due to injury, and this has left Rangers extremely short-handed in the midfield area.
In attack as well, the recent knocks picked up by Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe were cause for concern. Although both of them are expected to be fit for the upcoming weekend, the potential of further fitness issues will be lingering on the back of Gerrard’s mind.
Alfredo Morelos is joined by the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe as the alternate striking options. While Greg Stewart was also considered a centre-forward, the influx of numbers has caused the club to move him over to the flank. The four-man group of strikers does look highly effective on paper, but taking Morelos out of the equation would leave them in a sensitive position. Kemar Roofe has done well since coming into the team, but Cedric Itten is yet to really show the Gers’ faithful what he’s all about. Moreover, Defoe’s rising age will also be a concern.
What Makes Morelos Such An Important Player For Rangers?
The Colombian striker boasts a unique skill-set that cannot be replicated by any of the other names in Steven Gerrard’s roster. Capable of leaving defenders for dead with his exemplary movement and pace, the former Helsinki man also has the ability to link up with the wingers in an efficient manner. Arguably the deadliest finisher in the entirety of the Premiership, the striker’s contributions to this Rangers side over the last couple of seasons cannot be quantified. Despite not being the biggest, Morelos offers good physical presence in the final third of the pitch too.
Gerrard Admitting Alfredo Morelos Could Remain A Rangers Player: Why They Cannot Afford To Cash In
The Ibrox club have started the new league season looking like the team to beat, with not a single goal conceded after seven weeks of action. Although their excellent defensive record deserves massive credit, it must not draw attention away from the fluency of some of their attacking players. The likes of Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi have stepped up when required, and Alfredo Morelos has unsurprisingly had an important part to play as well. With the opportunity to trump Celtic to the league title still very much alive, keeping Morelos should be treated with the utmost importance by Steven Gerrard and his backroom team.
