According to a recent report by Portuguese news source A Bola, as has been translated by Birmingham Mail, FC Porto’s Malian international striker Moussa Marega is said to be on the lookout for a switch to the Premier League this summer. The report suggests that the attacker has set himself the target of finding a Premier League move and that there is no shortage of interest from the English top-flight either. Wolves’ prior interest in the player has been well documented, and the Daily Mirror’s report from May of this year highlights that fact with a degree of clarity.
Although the report has clarified that former Wolves target Moussa Marega wants a Premier League move, whether or not Nuno reignites his interest in the attacker remains to be seen. Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and West Ham United have all been touted to be keen on the Malian’s services as well. Speaking to A Bola, Marega’s agent said, “At 29, Moussa is no longer old enough to have dreams. Playing in the Premier League, more than an illusion, is an objective, as it will be for most footballers. Yes, it is true that I have been contacted by several English clubs. If a business arises that allows FC Porto to earn good money with the transfer, that would be perfect and would make Moussa very happy.”
What Is Wolves’ Current Situation In Attack?
The Molineux club have been one of the strongest forces in the Premier League scene for the last couple of seasons now, and a lot of that is down to the excellent work that’s being put in by Nuno Espírito Santo and his backroom team. The acquisitions of names like Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence have paid dividends for the team from Black Country, while the likes of Adama Traore and Diogo Jota have continued to deliver the goods at the expected rate. Despite this, one thing that’s worth considering is the lack of out-and-out centre-forwards in the Portuguese gaffer’s roster.
As good as Raul Jimenez has been leading the line, depending on the Mexican to deliver the goods on a daily basis could take a toll on his fitness. Although Jota offers the versatility required to be deployed down the middle, his lack of physical attributes makes it difficult to use him as a lone striker in the Premier League.
Leo Bonatini and Leandro Campana are Wolves’ two alternate options in the role. Still, the fact that neither played any part in the team last season could come as a stumbling block to the manager’s plan for the upcoming campaign.
What Makes Moussa Marega A Good Option For Wolves?
For starters, the Malian striker has been ever-present in this highly-rated Porto team since returning from his loan spell at Vitoria Guimarães in the summer of 2017. Having featured in a total of 150 appearances in the Portuguese top-flight, the attacker’s scoring record reads an eye-watering 70 goals and 34 assists. Not only is Marega a good finisher of the ball, but he has also got the pedigree required to excel in a tournament as competitive as the Premier League. His tally of six goals and five assists from 15 Champions League encounters will come as an attractive aspect to Nuno as well.
Wolves Target Moussa Marega Wants A Premier League Move: Should Nuno Go For It?
The biggest concern for Wolves fans going into the season will be the lack of depth in the centre-forward role, and Marega does seem to be custom-built to address that issue. Strong and physically dominant in his play, the Malian would offer this Wolves side something different in attack when compared to Jimenez.
The Mexican is arguably among the best finishers in the league, while his hold-up play is right up there with the best too. Marega though would offer Nuno an alternative skill-set that he could look to exploit. Having a plan B in place has certainly never hurt anyone, and as things stand, Marega does look like a fairly good option for Wolves to consider this summer.
