As we head towards the start of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, clubs are already closing in on their final preparation.
Tottenham Hotspur, for one, are among the clubs looking to restore themselves following a disappointing 2019/20 campaign. The Lilywhites showed some promise under Jose Mourinho during the backend of last season and have already made a few smart signings.
In this article, we will talk about the strongest possible Tottenham lineup with their new signings next season.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Defence
Matt Doherty’s arrival from Wolves could go a long way in helping Mourinho instil more solidity and consistency in defence. He is a guaranteed starter at right-back, ahead of the unpredictable Serge Aurier.
The same can be said for Ben Davies, who is currently the only reliable option for Spurs at left-back, especially with Danny Rose facing an uncertain future at the club.
In central defence, Toby Alderweireld is set to take the lead, following the departure of his compatriot, Jan Vertonghen. He is now the club’s most experienced defender and will look to marshal the backline, alongside the young Davinson Sanchez.
The Colombian international is a better option than Juan Foyth and Japhet Tanganga, but he must improve his performances on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris should retain his place in between the sticks, despite the arrival of the highly experienced Joe Hart.
Midfield
Tottenham Hotspur signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg earlier this summer in an attempt to bolster the midfield department. The Dane is a better, well-rounded option when compared to Harry Winks or Moussa Sissoko.
As for his midfield partner, Tanguy Ndombele, if he remains at the club, must be incorporated into the first-team plans. The Frenchman is undoubtedly one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, and Tottenham could be significantly boosted if he finds his footing in the Premier League next season.
Attack
Ndombele starting in central midfield means Giovani Lo Celso should occupy the number ten role, ahead of Dele Alli. The Argentine has been one of Spurs’ best players since the turn of the year and will become their main source of creativity in the upcoming campaign.
Elsewhere, Lucas Moura seems like a better option than Steven Bergwijn at right-wing, but there is no doubt that Jose Mourinho will rotate these two individuals. Son Heung-Min, meanwhile, is a guaranteed starter on the opposite flank, along with the main striker Harry Kane.
