Manchester City clinched a hard-fought 2-1 win against Bournemouth in the third round of the EFL Cup competition. The two sides took on each other, and Pep Guardiola’s men had to wait until the 75th minute for Phil Foden to score the winning goal after the first half ended at 1-1.
Young striker Liam Delap was the one to open the scoring to put the hosts in the lead in the 18th minute of the match. However, it was cancelled out by Sam Sturridge’s strike in the 22nd minute as Bournemouth came back into the game. Both sides fought hard after that, but the Cityzens were the ones to have the last laugh as Foden found the back of the net in the 75th minute.
Here is how the Manchester City players were rated from their win against Bournemouth.
Zack Steffen 7
It was a rather quiet outing for the USA international as he had to deal with only one shot on target throughout the match that ended up in the back of the net.
Kyle Walker 7
A solid performance from the Englishman as he made a few runs into the opposition half with the ball. Did well to track back and defend as well.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis 6
Did a good job as he stood up against the Bournemouth strikers and kept them at bay. Overall a decent performance from the young centre-back.
Eric García 5.5
Though it was a well-composed performance from the defensive ace for most parts of the match, he should have done better to prevent Sturridge from scoring the goal.
Adrián Bernabé 5
The Spaniard made a few good runs into the opposition half with the ball but could not deliver the end product. An unfortunate injury led to a premature ending to his performance as he had to be stretchered off in the 36th minute of the match.
Tommy Doyle 7
The English midfielder showed great control on the ball and played a few key passes as well. Was taken off in the 67th minute.
Rodri 6.5
Looked in good touch and made several good interceptions in the middle of the pitch to break down the opposition attacks. Controlled the ball well.
Phil Foden 8
The English midfielder came of age in this match as he was in phenomenal form against the Cherries. Scored the winning goal for his side to take them through to the next round.
Riyad Mahrez 6
Kept pushing for the goal since the start of the match. A decent performance from the experienced campaigner.
Ferran Torres 7
An impressive outing from the Spanish international as his quick footwork proved good enough for the opposition defenders.
Liam Delap 8
Looked dangerous from the word go and created a few goal-scoring opportunities for his side. Got his side into the lead with an early goal.
Substitutes
Benjamin Mendy 6
A solid performance from the Frenchman both in the defence as well as the attack after he came on for the injured Bernabe in the 36th minute.
Kevin De Bruyne 6
Played a decent game and played some key passes to set up his teammates from the midfield as he replaced Rodri in the 61st minute.
Raheem Sterling 7
Bamboozled the Bournemouth defenders with his classy footwork after he came on in the 67th minute of the match.
