According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Premier League outfit Everton are said to be close to agreeing a loan deal for the services of Chelsea’s English centre-half Fikayo Tomori. The report suggests that the Toffees are in talks to try and expedite a move, on the back of a sensational spending spree by Carlo Ancelotti’s side. The latest additions include Colombian ace James Rodriguez, former Watford man Abdoulaye Doucoure and Napoli’s Allan. A defensive addition has been on the agenda at Goodison Park, and Tomori would fit the bill pretty well.
Although the report has claimed that Everton are close to a loan deal for Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori, the Toffees’ first-choice option was said to be Arsenal man Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian understandably chose to make the move to London rather than Merseyside, with Arsenal’s inclusion in the Europa League offering a much more attractive project.
Tomori was reportedly close to agreeing on a loan move to Rennes but is now in talks with Ancelotti’s side over a potential switch in the coming days. The Goodison Park manager’s shift of attention to the defensive phase of his team has been apparent to see as well.
What Did Tomori Achieve At Chelsea Last Season?
The youngster was a part of Frank Lampard’s Derby County side from the 18/19 campaign, where the Englishman was a regular at the heart of the defence. Not only did the defender miss just two outings in the entire league campaign, but his performances were so good that Lampard took him back to Chelsea and offered him a competitive role in the squad. Tomori started the season as a valuable member of the first-team, and in Antonio Rudiger’s absence, he took over as the first-choice centre-half for a period as well. Despite showing various signs of potential, Rudiger’s return from injury greatly affected the youngster’s playing time in the side.
Although this was the case, he came up with one of the most memorable Chelsea goals of the entire campaign last season by scoring what can only be described as an absolute worldie against Wolves. That strike from distance was so good that it was even awarded the title of Blues’ best goal of the campaign at the end of the season.
After the resumption of football following the COVID-19 situation though, Tomori wasn’t even given a look-in by Lampard. While that could be down to what was on the line in the last few weeks, the fact that he didn’t get a single minute of league action would definitely have been frustrating.
What Makes Tomori A Good Option For Everton?
The former Derby County loanee was nothing short of a revelation at the back for Chelsea this season, and his appearances in the early parts of the campaign are the perfect indicator of just what he’s capable of. Adept at reading passes into space and making timely interceptions, Tomori offers a decent physical presence at the back. Often described to be the fastest player at Chelsea at least until the end of last season, his pace and athleticism will have a significant role to play this term. A good tackler, Tomori shows excellent composure and decision-making skills with the ball at his feet as well.
Everton Are Close To A Loan Deal For Chelsea’s Fikayo Tomori: Should Lampard Sanction This?
The summer acquisition of Thiago Silva has brought in some much-needed experience at the back, and his partnership with one of the Blues’ other centre-half options will likely be depended on for the entirety of the campaign. With Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger all available as options, it isn’t overly surprising that the Blues are listening to offers for Tomori. The youngster impressed heavily in the early parts of last campaign, and like Zouma, a loan stint at Everton could be the one that earns him a place in Lampard’s defensive plans for the 21/22 Premier League campaign.
