Lancs Live has recently reported that Burnley winger Dwight McNeil is still on Manchester United‘s radar this summer. The Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping to strengthen his squad during this summer transfer window and has kept an eye on the Clarets winger ahead of the new season (via Lanc Live).
McNeil’s Fruitful Season At Burnley
McNeil enjoyed another solid campaign at the Turf Moor after producing a series of productive displays on the left side of Sean Dyche’s attack. The Rochdale-born wide player featured in 40 matches for the Lancashire outfit last season, netting two goals and providing six assists in the process across all fronts.
The 20-year-old managed to influence the game at both ends of the pitch as he averaged 1.2 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.4 key passes and 2.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2019-20 Premier League campaign. He has taken care of the ball well based on his pass completion rate of 79.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
The three-time England U-21 international has got the potential to become a major star in English football soon. Maybe joining a club like Man United could give him the platform to take his game to another level. The Red Devils have currently got Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Daniel James as their first-choice wingers. Hence, Solskjaer won’t be able to guarantee McNeil regular playing time which will be a concern for the player.
What Will The Clarets Star Bring To The Table?
McNeil has developed a healthy habit of completing some lung-bursting dribbles down the left flank. When the English wing wizard is playing with confidence on the field, he can get to the by-line and deliver some inviting crosses into the opposition penalty box. However, he needs to improve a lot of aspects of his game, including his end-product in the final third if he wants to become a top-level winger someday.
Should Man United Table An Offer For McNeil In This Off-Season?
The Red Devils can always benefit from adding someone of McNeil’s versatility and potential. He will enhance the overall depth of Solskjaer’s squad, which might help Man United close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City at the summit of English football.
With the Premier League campaign set to return later this month, the Mancunian giants should consider launching a move to bring McNeil to the Theatre of Dreams this summer. It seems like Solskjaer can use him regularly in the domestic cup competitions which might help Man United challenge for multiple trophies at the highest level.
At 20, McNeil has got plenty of time to develop himself into a top wide player in England, so he will be an ideal, long-term acquisition for Man United. Furthermore, the Clarets playmaker will increase competition for places within Solskjaer’s squad and could become a fan-favourite at Old Trafford if he can show some signs of progress in the coming seasons.
