Tottenham Hotspur slumped to a narrow 1-0 defeat in their opening Premier League fixture against Everton. The Lilywhites lacked invention and failed to break down an organised opponent as Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second-half goal proved to be the main difference between the two sides.
Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings Vs Everton
Hugo Lloris 6/10
Hugo Lloris practically had very little to do as most of Everton’s efforts were either tame or wide. He did well to force Richarlison into moving wide as the Brazilian ultimately lost his balance. However, the goalkeeper had no chance of stopping Calvert-Lewin’s header.
Matt Doherty 6.5/10
Matt Doherty was one of the more industrious players for Tottenham in his debut today. He had the license to move forward and notably had an attempt on goal saved by Jordan Pickford. He worked hard for his team, providing a decent all-round performance.
Toby Alderweireld 4/10
Toby Alderweireld was completely outclassed by Richarlison’s speed in the first half in what was Everton’s best opportunity of the game. The Belgian international failed to marshal the defence and looked clumsy at the back.
Eric Dier 5/10
Eric Dier wasn’t better off either as the Englishman should have done way better in keeping check of Calvert-Lewin who scored the header in the second half. His inconsistent performance meant Tottenham failed to match the solidity of their opponents.
Ben Davies 5.5/10
Came up with the poor backpass that eventually led to the Richarlison chance. Aside from that, the left-back played some good passes but had a challenging task of keeping James Rodriguez quiet on the left flank.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 6/10
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had a decent enough debut. He put in a good shift in central midfield, establishing himself as a reliable passing option and covering a lot of ground. It wasn’t enough to outmatch Everton, however.
Harry Winks 5.5/10
Harry Winks’ inclusion into the starting lineup was perhaps redundant as the Englishman failed to provide anything new aside from delivering simple short passes. He was taken off in the second half.
Lucas Moura 5.5/10
Lucas Moura was another player who failed to make anything happen in the final third. The Brazilian worked hard but lacked involvement as well as the end product. Did create one crucial turnover that led to a great chance though.
Dele Alli 5/10
Dele Alli had a miserable game in the number ten role. He found it difficult to impose his presence, and his first touches were truly awful. Had a shot saved by Pickford before getting subbed during half-time and rightly so.
Son Heung-Min 7/10
Son Heung-Min was the architect behind most of Tottenham’s scoring opportunities this evening. However, one might argue that the South Korean international may have done a better job in terms of his decision making.
Harry Kane 6/10
Harry Kane had minimal chances to work with as Spurs failed to break down an organised and disciplined Everton defence. A quiet game for the Tottenham centre forward.
SUBSTITUTES
Moussa Sissoko 6/10
Replaced Alli after the restart in order to provide more energy in the middle of the park. He was later used as a right-back, following the substitution of Doherty.
Steven Bergwijn 5.5/10
Failed to create anything after coming on for Winks around the hour mark despite his team dominating possession.
Tanguy Ndombele 6/10
Replaced Doherty during the final phase of the game. The Frenchman offered some useful forward passes that were missing from the Spurs midfield. However, it was too little too late.
