Manchester United will kick off their Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford later this month after their opening weekend game versus Burnley was postponed. The Red Devils will hope to close the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City in the upper echelons of English football, but it would be easier said than done even with new signing, Donny van de Beek in their squad.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might opt to rely on the 4-2-3-1 formation once again in this upcoming campaign but will have a real selection headache in his hands with regards to who he opts for in his midfield. Both Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek would be the obvious choices, but playing without a defensive-minded player at the centre of the park could be quite risky especially with the likes of Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred available for selection in the Man United squad.
4-2-3-1 Strongest Manchester United Lineup For The New Season Including Donny Van De Beek
Defence
David De Gea will have a great fight in his hands as he will be challenged by Dean Henderson, who enjoyed a brilliant loan spell at Sheffield United last season. However, the Spanish custodian remains Solskjaer’s number one choice as far as goalkeeping is concerned at Old Trafford.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka will be a guaranteed starter at right-back while Luke Shaw looks to stay injury-free on the other side as the left-back. Brandon Williams could give Shaw a run for his money in the race to secure a regular starting spot at left-back in the upcoming campaign.
Midfield
On paper, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek should walk into the Man United midfield. However, Pogba’s inconsistent form will be a cause for concern while van de Beek is still unproven in the Premier League. Hence, we can expect Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Fred to settle for a rotational role and push for a holding midfield place in Solskjaer’s first-team.
The talented trio of Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood will make up the Red Devils attacking midfield. All three players will carry most of the creative burden for Man United in the opposition half.
Attack
Anthony Martial will be Solskjaer’s main man up top once again. The French striker will lead the line for the Mancunian giants after scoring 23 goals and providing 12 assists for them in the previous campaign across all competitions.
Odion Ighalo might get the responsibility to play as Martial’s back-up on the bench.
