A lot of you were asking about what happened to the Bongani Zungu’s transfer to Rangers in the last few days. In my way, I will try to provide clarification so that you better understand where this deal stands right now.
The Timeline
First, having spoken with a source within Amiens, I can confirm that the French club had accepted a bid for Zungu from Rangers. If you read my story on the 28th of last month, the fee was €4.4m with €2m being quoted as the upfront fee. Next, we have Joe Crann (a journalist close to the player) who broke the story at almost the same time that the player was negotiating a deal with Rangers.
I also reported that the player had left Amiens for the UK to negotiate with Rangers. It is important to note here that Joe Crann’s source is probably from a completely different source itself. It is a reasonable guess that he is being given information from someone in the player’s camp. In my case, I built up the contacts inside Amiens when I was covering their unfair demotion from the Ligue 1.
Now, last week (August 4th if we are to be exact) however things turned a bit sour in this deal. I got news from my source inside Amiens that the player had returned to the club and in training. Negotiations were still ongoing, however.
What was the most important thing for me was that it was at this time that Rangers informed a few people close to them (full disclosure, I was not told anything from the club), that a deal was not at all close at this point and the interest was never that tangible. It seemed interesting that they would deny even a serious interest in the player if negotiations were going fine.
Right Now
There has not been much of an update since as Zungu seems to be enjoying life in Paris. There was a rumour that an unnamed club in Italy showed their interest in the midfielder, but as I could not collaborate it from any other source, I did not publish it.
While I have no doubt Amiens had a bid accepted from Rangers for Zungu given I know the source who informed me, Rangers’ recent stance has led me to believe something has gone awry in this deal. Wait and watch this space.
