According to The Athletic, Tottenham are willing to hand Ryan Sessegnon a second chance next season. The youngster has become a subject of interest from a host of top clubs including Barcelona, Celtic and AC Milan. The Spurs hierarchy and even Jose Mourinho, however, are intent on giving him another opportunity to prove himself following a dire debut campaign in north London.
Where Will Sessegnon Play Next Season?
Sessegnon’s preferred position at Tottenham has been a tough nut to crack for both Mauricio Pochettino and Mourinho.
He was initially brought in as a left-winger. However, at Spurs, he is mostly viewed as a left-back. In fact, two of his six appearances in the Premier League this past season came in the left side of the defence.
When Sessegnon did feature at left-wing, he had the chance to complete only one game, a 2-2 draw with relegated Norwich City where star player Son Heung-Min was missing.
So essentially, it is fair to assume that the youngster will not become a first-team regular anytime soon, at least in the attack where quality individuals like Son and Steven Bergwijn will always be favoured by Mourinho.
The left-back position, therefore, is still the likeliest option for Sessegnon next season. Alternatively, the 20-year-old could feature as a wing-back, should Mourinho opt for a three-man backline. It should stylistically suit the young England star, at least more than a deeper defensive role.
Can Sessegnon Make A Breakthrough?
Sessegnon has shown very little of what he can do during his first season at Tottenham. It is, however, largely due to fitness problems and a lack of game-time, meaning it is still hard to assume whether or not he can succeed in north London.
One thing is for sure, a more prominent role in the first-team should help Sessegnon become a better individual, and that is where the left-back position looks promising.
Indeed, the Lilywhites have only one reliable option in that role in the shape of Ben Davies, with Danny Rose likely to leave the club. They do have Dennis Cirkin, but the 18-year-old academy sensation has no experience in professional football.
Davies himself has improved under Mourinho. But, given the strenuous nature of the English footballing schedule, it is reasonable for Sessegnon to expect some game-time at Tottenham next season, especially if he can commit himself to the left-back role.
Also, the 20-year-old can always provide back-up for the likes of Son, Bergwijn and Lucas, thus promising the Spurs manager with guaranteed depth in the attack. Therefore, it won’t be surprising to see Sessegnon making a breakthrough in the Premier League next season.
