As reported by Luton Today, a permanent Tottenham exit is a possibility for Cameron Carter-Vickers, which was hinted by Luton Town chief Nathan Jones.
During an interview, Jones stated, “I might not rule out going back in for Cameron, but what we don’t like doing is loans, so you can work your own way out from that.” when asked about Carter-Vickers’ return to Spurs.
It signals the fact that there is still a possibility that Cameron Carter-Vickers could leave Tottenham this summer, especially with the Championship side intent on signing players on a permanent basis.
Carter-Vickers’ Success at Luton Town Last Season
Carter-Vickers initially joined Luton Town back in January in a short-term loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur. He didn’t take time settling in either, having spent the first half of the season on loan to Stoke City, also in the Championship.
The US international quickly became a key member of the Luton Town backline, making 16 league appearances. He built a formidable defensive partnership alongside club captain Sonny Bradley that was critical in helping the Hatters sensationally escape relegation.
Carter-Vickers was particularly impressive in the draw with Leeds United and also in the win over Hull City in MD45, when he assisted Kazenga Lua Lua’s late winner.
The 22-year-old’s performances have been backed up by statistics as well, with the defender notably averaging a whopping 6.6 clearances per game, higher than anyone else in the Championship (among players who have played at least played 15 or more games).
Does Carter-Vickers’ Have Any Future At Tottenham?
It might be too soon for Tottenham to decide the fate of Carter-Vickers right now and for good reasons.
The Lilywhites lack depth in the defensive department following the departure of Jan Vertonghen. They are yet to sign a new centre-back in the market while both Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier have struggled with inconsistency.
Although there is no doubt that Jose Mourinho is looking for a new central defender to replace Vertonghen next season, the uncertainty surrounding the potential new signing, combined with the futility of players like Sanchez, Juan Foyth and Dier may just open up a prospect for Carter-Vickers.
The US international has shown that he is capable of providing solidity at the back, albeit in the Championship and has the athleticism that could come in handy under Mourinho’s footballing philosophy.
However, Carter-Vickers will still have to compete against another young centre-back in Japhet Tanganga, and with Spurs likely to sign a new defender, the 22-year-old still faces an uncertain future at the club.
The ideal scenario for the north London giants right now would be to wait, knowing the fact that the transfer market slams shut in early October.
