Spanish news outlet AS has claimed that Real Madrid have identified Red Bull Leipzig centre-half Dayot Upamecano as a long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos. It is believed that the French starlet is someone who Zinedine Zidane ‘likes a lot’, but Los Blancos are not expected to sign the player this summer. The Madrid giants are eyeing a future move for the Bundesliga youngster whose current contract at the Red Bull Arena runs out in the summer of 2023 and contains a €45m release clause (via AS).
Upamecano’s Incredible Form In The Champions League So Far
The French whizkid managed to steer his team to a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals earlier this month before eventually losing to PSG in the semifinal.
The 21-year-old has taken part in 37 matches for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this term, picking up two assists in various competitions. On the defensive end, the Evreux-born prospect has impressed a lot of people by averaging 3.0 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per 90 minutes in European football (stats via whoscored).
The Leipzig centre-back has emerged as a breakout star in the Bundesliga as well and seems to have all the right attributes required to be a highly-decorated footballer in the future. Therefore, it makes sense that Zidane is keeping a close eye on him despite not having the financial resources to land him this summer.
What Are The Main Strengths Of The French Wonderkid?
Standing at 1.86m, Upamecano has the physical presence to dominate the aerial battle with the opposition and can be a commanding figure at the heart of the defence. He has also been excellent with his ball-distribution out from the back. However, what makes the Frenchman such a highly-rated defender is his ability to read the danger quickly, which allows him to pull some important interceptions and last-ditch clearances inside his half. Plus, he has even got the pace to make a few lung-bursting recovering runs and can come to his team’s rescue time and again when needed.
Will Recruiting Upamecano In The Future Be A Good Move For Los Blancos?
At 21, Upamecano has displayed plenty of promising signs during this campaign by finding a run of consistency with his overall performances in defence. He is a star in the making and would be a brilliant addition for any top club in Europe. The French Under-21 international has got what it takes to serve as an ideal long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
If Upamecano can maintain his high standards in the upcoming campaign, then Zidane should consider orchestrating a move to bring him to the Spanish capital next summer. He is already good enough to play at the highest level every week which makes him a perfect option for Los Blancos to consider when they might have some funds available to pull off a potential transfer at the end of next season.
