Marca has recently claimed that Manchester United are facing fierce competition in pursuit of Real Madrid full-back Sergio Reguilon this summer. It is believed that the Red Devils are keeping a keen eye on the Spanish defender, but will have to battle it out with Tottenham Hotspur, Juventus and Inter Milan in the race to acquire his services in this off-season (via Marca).
Reguilon’s Encouraging Loan Spell At Seville Last Season
The 23-year-old was in fine form while playing for Sevilla on loan last season as he produced some memorable displays on the left side of Julen Lopetegui’s defence. The Madrid-born defensive ace made 38 appearances for the Spanish outfit, finishing the previous campaign with three goals and five assists to his name in various competitions.
The Real Madrid academy graduate influenced the game at both ends of the pitch after he averaged 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.3 key passes, 0.8 crosses and 1.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga and the UEFA Europa League. The one-time Spanish U-21 international even managed to distribute possession well from the left flank based on his pass completion rate of 81.4% in the Spanish top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Reguilon enjoyed one of the best seasons of his young career in the last term. Still, he won’t be guaranteed regular playing time at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium which has increased his need to part ways with Los Blancos this summer.
What Will The Spanish Full-Back Bring To The Table?
Reguilon is a tough-tackling left-back who has the pace and work-ethic to make some marauding runs out on the wide areas. He can sense the danger quickly and has the ability to pull off a few crucial interceptions at the back. The Spaniard is also not shy of clearing his lines when being outnumbered inside his half. He has even begun to contribute in the attacking third by scoring and setting up some important goals for his team.
Is Reguilon The Right Fit For The Red Devils?
An up-and-coming talent like Reguilon would be a welcome addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad ahead of the new campaign. He will bring plenty of creativity and could add more depth to Man United’s squad at Old Trafford. However, the Real Madrid defender will have to battle with Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams for a regular starting spot in Solskjaer’s first XI.
Both Shaw and Williams are currently sidelined due to injury, so the Red Devils could benefit from recruiting Reguilon, who has shown a clean bill of health in recent times. Plus, at 23, the Spanish left-back is only going to get better in the coming seasons as long as he gets the backing of his manager and a competitive environment to improve his game. All in all, Reguilon will be a great fit for Man United in the long-run. However, his arrival could hamper the development of Brandon Williams, which is something Solskjaer should consider before making any offers for the La Liga star.
