The Daily Mail has recently stated that Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is gathering interest from Italy as both AC Milan and Benevento have ‘set their sights’ on the player this summer. The competition is fierce, with Crystal Palace and Aston Villa also on the hunt for the Reds outcast in this off-season (via The Daily Mail).
Grujic’ Productive Loan Spell In The German Top-Flight
The 24-year-old enjoyed a fruitful two-year loan stay at Hertha Berlin where he answered a lot of his critics by producing some eye-catching displays as part of the club’s senior side. He was involved in 31 matches for the Berlin outfit, finding the back of the net four times while earning two assists across all fronts in the previous campaign.
The Belgrad-born playmaker should be praised for his all-round performances at the centre of the park based on his average of 1.9 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 2.3 clearances, 1.2 shots and 1.0 dribbles per game in the 2019-20 Bundesliga season. However, Grujic needs to take care of the ball better after completing 78.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Germany (stats via whoscored).
The Serbian talent has done well to show some major signs of progress during his two-year spell in German football. He is now a part of the Liverpool squad that has travelled to Austria for a training camp earlier this month. However, it is unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will keep Grujic at the club next season with so much depth already there in his midfield department. Therefore, both the player and the club can benefit from parting ways with each other before the new season kicks off next month.
What Does The Eight-Time Serbian International Offer On The Pitch?
Grujic is a strong presence in midfield and loves a tackle to secure the ball back for his teammates. He is often quick to deal with the danger and keeps his composure well when making a few crucial clearances at the back. When firing on all cylinders, the Serbian can be a valuable member for any top-flight side in Europe. At the same time, he also deserves credit for adding some important goals and assists to his name over the past 12 months.
Should The Reds Ship Grujic Out Of Anfield This Summer?
Even when Grujic is playing with confidence on the field, he doesn’t stand a chance of getting into the Liverpool first-team as there are far too many midfielders ahead of him in the Anfield pecking order. The likes of Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson have proven themselves to be worthy starters under Klopp, while Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain provide cover for them on the bench.
Hence, there is simply no room for the talented midfielder at Merseyside, so Klopp should consider shipping Grujic out and using the money acquired from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of his Premier League-winning team.
