During an interview with Football Insider, Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to sign Antonee Robinson. The former professional striker believes that the Wigan Athletic left-back, especially following the Latics’ relegation from the Championship, could be a bargain for the Whites this summer.
“I’m surprised more people aren’t looking at him, I would love him at Leeds, if we’re going to get rid of someone like Barry Douglas I’d like Bielsa to take someone like him on, definitely.”, Whelan told Football Insider.
Antonee Robinson’s Rapid Rise To Prominence
A product of the Everton youth academy, Robinson has been a part of Wigan Athletic since 2018. He initially joined the club on loan in search of regular game-time and instantly became an integral part of the club’s backline, making 26 first-team appearances in his debut campaign. As a result, his move to Wigan was made permanent last summer for a fee of just €2.2 million.
Robinson didn’t disappoint either, impressing the onlookers with his pace and tenacity. Indeed, the US international is known for his dynamic presence on the flanks and a willingness to march forward that has seen him average 0.8 key passes per game this past season.
But most notably, Robinson has attempted a whopping 3.7 tackles per game with a success rate of almost 60%. It is indicative of the player’s eagerness to win back possession for his team. Moreover, he is also quick when it comes to rotating possession and squeezing through tight spaces, having averaged over two successful dribbles per game.
Robinson’s contribution, therefore, has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dire campaign for Wigan Athletic as they finished 23rd in the Championship table.
Why Robinson Could Be A Massive Coup For Leeds United
Noel Whelan may be right to suggest a move for Robinson, especially if Leeds United do plan on offloading Barry Douglas this summer. His potential departure could leave Stuart Dallas as the only reliable option at left-back, with Ezgjan Alioski likely to be considered as an attacking player next season.
Robinson, in that regard, could be a perfect alternative to Dallas. His urgency, pace and tenacity should add a new dimension to Leeds’ approach play from the back.
It can also inject more vigour and threat to their counter-attacking game, which could be necessary as the Whites are unlikely to enjoy much possession in the Premier League.
Robinson is also a cost-effective option thanks to Wigan Athletic getting relegated this past season. Hence, Marcelo Bielsa should definitely consider making a move for this rising star of US football.
