According to an Icelandic news outlet, SoccerNews, Leeds United are hopeful of signing Hjortur Hermannsson. The Brondby centre-back has been eyed as the latest target for Marcelo Bielsa, who is keen on adding reinforcements in the defensive unit. The Whites are apparently readying a €2.5 million bid to sign Hermannsson, whose contract at Brondby expires in summer 2021.
Who is Hjortur Hermannsson?
A product of the PSV youth academy, Hermannsson was the member of the club’s youth system until 2016 when he moved to Brondby, at the age of 21. He moved to Denmark in search of regular game-time, and the transfer did indeed pay off.
During his ongoing four year spell at Brondby, Hermannsson has featured in 131 competitive matches. He has become an ever-present figure in the backline for the Danish giants while also winning 14 caps for the Icelandic national side.
As far as gameplay is concerned, Hermannsson is primarily known for his ability to play out from the back. He has an excellent passing range that allows him to distribute possession.
The 25-year-old is also blessed with an imposing 1.90m frame that gives him a considerable advantage in terms of physical and aerial duels. Additionally, he is known for his aggression and defensive commitment, thus making him a tailor-made fit for the Premier League.
Is Hermannsson a good option for Leeds United?
Leeds United are in desperate need of reinforcements in the defensive department. Their star centre-back Ben White has already returned to Brighton & Hove Albion while Gaetano Berardi is unlikely to have any future at the club, especially after picking up an ACL injury. It leaves Bielsa with Liam Cooper as the only reliable option at centre-back. And that is where Hermannsson comes into the fray.
The Icelandic international could be an ideal option for Leeds United in their pursuit to add a little bit of depth in the centre-back role. His ability to pass the ball out from the back should tune in well with the possession-oriented game of Bielsa. Additionally, he can also add a more physical presence in the defensive side of things, thanks to his commitment and physique.
However, what makes Hermannsson such an appealing target for the Whites is his €2.5 million price tag. It should make him a cost-effective alternative for White, as it is only fair to consider the economic damage inflicted by Coronavirus that could potentially restrict Leeds from making a lot of moves in the market this summer.
