Leeds United are on the verge of securing yet another and perhaps their most important coup this summer, in the shape of Rodrigo Moreno. Valencia have already agreed terms with the newly-promoted outfit regarding the move, which is only awaiting necessary formalities, the club confirmed. Although the move hasn’t been officiated by both parties, we will, in this article, discuss what Moreno’s addition could mean for Leeds United.
An Upgrade Over Bamford?
Questions have been duly raised regarding the lack of productivity from Patrick Bamford and whether or not it could be viable for Leeds United to have him lead the line in the Premier League. Those questions may have just been answered with the addition of Rodrigo.
Much like Bamford, the 29-year-old is a modern day centre-forward who heavily relies on his technical quality. He can create chances in the final third and shift into a wider position if necessary. He had notably averaged one key pass per game in La Liga this past season.
However, what makes Rodrigo an upgrade over Bamford is his productivity. Although his tally of just four goals may not seem much, he was involved in a total of 13 goals in 27 matches, which is a fair chunk of the 51 goals Valencia managed to score in total.
As far as finishing is concerned, a key thing to point out when comparing these two individuals is the conversion rate. Rodrigo, for example, had attempted only 41 shots on goal in the league compared to Bamford’s 143.
While there’s not much stylistic or even statistical difference between Rodrigo and Bamford, the former’s pedigree at the highest level of football certainly makes him a better option than the ex-Chelsea starlet next season.
Do Leeds United Need More Strikers?
Despite Rodrigo’s all-round qualities in the final third, Leeds United may require at least another forward this summer. It is primarily because the 29-year-old has never actually led the line for Valencia.
Last season, for example, the Spaniard was a mere provider for more lethal goalscorers like Maxi Gomez and Kevin Gameiro. The duo combined for a total of 14 goals this past season.
Leeds United, in that regard, should employ a similar tactic and while Bamford is pretty much out of the question, they have been linked with a move for Arthur Cabral, of late.
The Brazilian has all the qualities necessary to thrive at Elland Road and could be an excellent option alongside the likes of Rodrigo and Jack Harrison next season.
