In a recent interview with Football Insider, Allan Hutton urged his former club Tottenham Hotspur to sign Callum Wilson from Bournemouth this summer when he said,
“I do think they need someone. Before all this pandemic stuff and Harry Kane was missing it was a really difficult time for them, obviously they had Son missing as well.
“I think Callum Wilson who can play number nine or from out wide, I think he gives them a couple different options. They could possibly get him on the cheap now they’ve been relegated.
“I think he does fit the bill, he’s a good age, a good goalscorer, so I think he’d be good to have in the squad. I can’t see him starting at Tottenham but I think he’d be a good squad member and that’s probably why Mourinho’s looking at him.”
Wilson’s Tough Spell At The Vitality Stadium Last Season
The English striker endured a difficult campaign with the Cherries as he ended up suffering the agony of being relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season. He deserves some credit for banging in nine goals and grabbing three assists in 39 matches under the tutelage of Eddie Howe last season across all competitions.
The Coventry-born marksman struggled to find consistency with his all-around performances up top as evident from his average of 1.6 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in England’s top tier. Wilson was also quite wasteful when passing the ball after completing just 64.5% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
The 28-year-old has been a useful asset for Bournemouth over the past couple of seasons. Now that they have been demoted to the EFL Championship, this summer could be Wilson’s big opportunity to join a high-profile top-flight team and test himself at the highest level every week.
What Will The English Marksman Offer On The Field?
Wilson loves to stretch the opposition defence with his quick runs in the final third and is usually seen playing on the shoulders of the last defender so that he can be a constant menace up top. He has transformed himself into a reliable goal-getter at the south coast of England but needs to up his game big time next season especially if he decides to seal a move to a top tier team this summer. The English centre-forward will also need to improve his link-up play in the decisive end of the pitch.
Should Jose Mourinho Listen To Hutton’s Advice By Making A Move For Wilson This Summer?
A proven striker like Wilson would be a welcome addition for Spurs as he could serve as an ideal back-up to Harry Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the coming seasons. His pace and killer instincts inside the opposition penalty area make him a perfect candidate for Jose Mourinho to consider in this off-season. He has what it takes to make a significant impact off the bench which will give Spurs another dimension in attack.
Plus, the Cherries star might also help the North London giants put up a strong challenge in the cup competitions, so it makes sense for Mourinho to listen to Hutton’s advice by arranging a cut-price move for Wilson before the transfer window slams shut in October.
