According to a recent report by Sky Sports, Everton have tabled an £18m offer for Real Madrid full-back Sergio Reguilon this summer. The same source has also stated that the Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti is keen on finding a suitable replacement for Leighton Baines, who had announced his retirement last weekend and the manager has set his sights on the Spanish defender during the summer transfer period.
Reguilon’s Impressive Loan Spell At Seville Last Season
The 23-year-old enjoyed a solid season on loan at Sevilla after producing quite a few impressive displays for them over the past 12 months. He has banged in two goals and provided four assists in 34 matches for the Spanish outfit in the previous campaign across all competitions, which highlight his growing influence in the opposition half.
Reguilon managed to find a run of consistency with his contributions at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.7 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.9 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.5 dribbles per game in La Liga and the UEFA Europa League last season. He has also been tidy with his ball-distribution after completing 81.4% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
The Madrid-born talent has represented Spain at the Under-21 level but is yet to earn a senior cap for his country. Maybe a summer switch to Goodison Park could give him a more prominent stage to showcase his skills and secure a few senior appearances for Spain in the years to come.
What Will The Spanish Left-Back Add To Carlo Ancelotti’s Team?
Reguilon can use his quickness and agility to make a few darting runs with the ball down the left flank. He can whip in some promising crosses into the opposition penalty area but needs to improve his decision-making in the attacking third. The Spanish full-back is often quick to sense the danger and can make some important interceptions and last-gasp clearances for his team at the back.
Recruiting a well-rounded left-back like Reguilon this summer could prove to be a shrewd move for Carlo Ancelotti and his long-term ambitions at Goodison Park. He will not only add some pace and variety to the Everton first-team but also increase competition for places within their squad.
Plus, the Spaniard is more than capable of keeping Lucas Digne on his toes in the race to secure a regular left-back spot at Merseyside next season. At 23, Reguilon has plenty of time to develop himself into a world-class full-back while Ancelotti could be the ideal man to oversee his development in the coming seasons. All in all, the La Liga defender will be a decent signing for the Toffees if they can find a way to lure him to the north-west of England before the start of the new campaign.
