In a recent report, the Daily Mirror has stated that Everton are showing interest in recruiting Manchester United keeper Sergio Romero this summer. It is understood that the Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to increase competition for Jordan Pickford and has identified the Red Devils goalie as an ideal candidate to fill in such a role at Merseyside next season.
However, Everton could face competition in the form of Leeds United in the race to land the Argentine custodian during this summer transfer period (via The Daily Mirror).
Romero’s Decent Run Of Form In European Football
Last season was full of mixed emotions for Romero as he impressed with his all-around displays in between the sticks for Man United, but struggled to earn first-team starts in the Premier League through no fault of his own. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer persisted on playing David De Gea in the league games while Romero kept catching the eye in the cup competitions.
The 33-year-old made a total of 17 appearances for the Mancunian giants in the previous campaign, conceding 12 goals and securing five clean sheets on all fronts. He did well to average 0.7 clearances and 2.6 long balls per game in the UEFA Europa League, but needs to be more accurate when passing the ball out from the back after making only 76.4% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Will The Argentine International Add To Carlo Ancelotti’s Side?
Romero has got outstanding reflexes that help him pull off some vital stops at the back. He is a decent handler of the ball and can make himself big when diving to save a goal-bound attempt from the opposition. The 96-capped Argentine international has come to his side’s rescue quite a few times in the Europa League last season, which goes to show how well he can perform at the big stage.
The Toffees would welcome an experienced keeper like Romero as he will be the perfect candidate to challenge Jordan Pickford for a first-team place at Goodison Park in the coming seasons. Pickford has been prone to making mistakes now and then, so it’s high time that someone pushed him for the right to start in Ancelotti’s first XI.
Plus, Romero’s addition will bolster Everton’s squad depth significantly as they try to compete for some major trophies in the years to come. The Man United goalie will help them compete in the cup competitions and would serve as a perfect number two under Ancelotti’s stewardship. At 33, Romero still has a lot to offer and might even have a few good years left in him to play at top gear. Therefore, the Toffees should go all out in search of the ex-Sampdoria custodian’s signature this summer.
