Manchester City faced off against Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals earlier tonight hoping to seal a win at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. The English team made a nervy start to the contest and conceded the opener when Maxwel Cornet found the back of the net in the 21st minute. Lyon hung on to their narrow lead and went into the half-time break one goal to the good.
Man City took some time to come up with the equaliser and finally managed to level the scoreline when Kevin De Bruyne scored from close range in the 69th minute. However, the French outfit kept a good defensive shape and looked threatening on the counter. Moussa Dembélé came off the bench to net two quickfire goals which sealed qualification for his team.
The match ended with the Mancunian outfit suffering a disappointing 3-1 loss away in Portugal.
Let’s take a look at how each Man City player fared during the match against Lyon.
GK: Ederson – 4/10
The Brazilian keeper ended up conceding three goals tonight which won’t make him happy. He should have done better to save either of Lyon’s two goals in the second 45 minutes.
CB: Fernandinho – 4/10
The Brazilian was far from his best as he looked a bit slow as part of Pep Guardiola’s back three. It was a poor defensive display from him during the game.
CB: Eric Garcia – 6/10
The Spanish centre-back kept a good shape and didn’t do too much wrong in the game. However, Garcia won’t be pleased after shipping in three goals tonight.
CB: Aymeric Laporte – 4.5/10
It was an unconvincing performance from him on the left side of Man City’s back three. He looked a bit nervy on the ball and struggled to keep the Lyon attackers quiet throughout the 90 minutes.
CDM: Rodri – 5/10
He failed to keep Lyon from moving the ball fast on the counter and struggled to establish his dominance at the centre of the park.
RM: Kyle Walker – 5/10
The English full-back struggled to cook up any meaningful chances in the attacking third and even had a tough time tracking the opposition runs inside his half.
CM: Ilkay Gundogan – 5/10
He kept the ball well in midfield, but lacked creativity in the final third. It was a disjointed display from him during the 90 minutes.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne – 6.5/10
The Belgian found it challenging to get into the game in the first 45, but showed his class by scoring his team’s equaliser with a well-placed finish in the 69th minute.
LM: Joao Cancelo – 6.5/10
The Portuguese wing-back enjoyed playing on the left flank and orchestrated some decent chances for his teammates inside the opposition penalty box.
ST: Gabriel Jesus – 4.5/10
The Brazilian striker worked his socks off, but never looked like he had a goal in him. His final touch often let him down.
ST: Raheem Sterling – 3/10
The English speedster got into some promising areas in the decisive end of the field. However, he was guilty of missing a sitter which could have levelled the scoreline, but instead, soon after his miss, Dembele scored at the other end to compound Sterling’s misery even further.
Substitutes:
RW: Riyad Mahrez – 5/10
The Algerian wing wizard had some neat touches in and around the opposition box without causing too many problems for the Lyon defenders.
CAM: David Silva – N/A
The Spaniard hardly had any time to make an impact.
