According to a recent report by Wigan Today, Premiership giants Celtic are said to have placed keen eyes on Wigan Athletic winger Jamal Lowe this summer, with a view of potentially bringing him to Parkhead in the coming weeks. The report suggests that there has been no shortage of bids for a variety of Wigan’s top players, owing largely to the fact that they have now been relegated to the League One. The points deduction that came with going into administration has hit the Latics quite hard, and this has triggered relegation clauses in the contracts of a flurry of their most sought-after players.
Although it has been clarified that Celtic are interested in Wigan’s Jamal Lowe, acquiring him this summer will be no cakewalk, with Championship sides Cardiff City and Millwall both keen on the speedster’s signature. Despite this, it has been suggested that the strongest interest of the lot has arrived from a Celtic, for a player the Latics signed for around £2m from Portsmouth but a season ago. With the likes of Antonee Robinson and Kieffer Moore likely on the move away from the DW Stadium, it could prove too much for them to try and keep hold of a talented winger like Lowe.
What Makes Jamal Lowe An Attractive Option For Celtic?
The former Portsmouth man was signed by the Latics last summer, as they looked to finally make their presence felt in the second division of English football. Unfortunately for them though, the events that transpired last season didn’t quite work out in their favour. Lowe is a right-winger by position but is capable of operating over on the other flank as well. Not just that, the Englishman is also versatile enough to be deployed as a number ten or even a second striker if required.
A willing runner with the ball at his feet, the 25-year-old boasts excellent speed over the short distance and has the quality required to dribble past any defender in the world on his day. Not only does Lowe boast good footwork and skills, he often displays a massive amount of confidence and composure in the final third of the pitch as well.
Although some might argue that the attacker’s end-product needs to improve, the fact that he sets up almost as many goals as he scores will be a sign of motivation for any potential suitors.
What Is Celtic’s Current Position In The Wide Areas?
With just James Forrest and Mohamed Elyounoussi available as realistic options in attack, the wide areas are one of the positions that Celtic need to acquire immediate reinforcements for. Their 5-1 thrashing of Hamilton last weekend had shown the Hoops’ attack-line in an excellent light, and if they’re able to maintain a similar trend for the remainder of the season, then there’s no doubt that they can achieve ten in a row. With that said though, it’s worth conceding that the other options that Lennon has in the role aren’t the greatest, with Karamoko Dembele and potentially Maryan Shved being the alternatives.
Celtic Are Interested In Wigan’s Jamal Lowe: Smart Move For Neil Lennon?
The Celts got their Premiership season off to the best possible start with a smashing victory against one of the weaker sides in the division. Not only did it allow Odsonne Edouard the opportunity to get his tally for the season off in the perfect manner, but it also allowed some of the other players in the roster to showcase their true quality.
The lack of depth in the wide ideas is surely something that Neil Lennon will be concerned about, and acquiring a talented winger like Lowe, who still has a long future ahead of him, could be a step in the right direction by the Parkhead club.
