According to Sport1, as cited by Ronan Murphy, Borussia Dortmund are ready to offload Sergio Gomez. The Bundesliga giants have given the young playmaker the permission to talk to other clubs and seek a permanent move away from Westphalia. Gomez had been loaned out to SD Huesca this past season and still has a contract at Dortmund until 2022.
Sergio Gomez’s Struggles At BVB
Gomez initially joined Borussia Dortmund back in January 2018, in a €3 million move from FC Barcelona. He was a product of the famed La Masia youth academy as he moved to the Bundesliga in search of regular-gametime.
However, Gomez never managed to impress the onlookers, although he was quite unlucky with the gametime he was given at Dortmund. In fact, he has featured in only three competitive games during his ongoing two and a half year spell at the club.
It is no surprise either given the fact that the Black and Yellows signed players like Julian Brandt and Thorgan Hazard last summer, which forced the club to send him out on loan to SD Huesca.
How Has Gomez Performed At SD Huesca?
Gomez moved to Huesca in search of regular game-time and this time around; he was given exactly what he was hoping for.
Indeed, the young Spaniard instantly became a key member of Huesca’s creative department, featuring in 36 matches in the Segunda Division. He scored one goal and provided three assists.
Although that isn’t great in terms of productivity, Gomez’s contributions were still crucial as Huesca ended the campaign as the champions, thereby securing promotion to the top-flight. However, it is fair to point out that the playmaker didn’t exactly set the world alight with his performances.
Are Dortmund Right To Offload Gomez?
Borussia Dortmund are intent on challenging Bayern Munich for the league title in the upcoming season. They already have a strong team, which they have further strengthened with the addition of players like Jude Bellingham and Thomas Meunier.
Bellingham, in particular, may have played a key role in the club’s decision to offload Gomez. The English whizkid is touted as the next big thing and is likely to feature in the starting lineup at some point next season.
Bellingham’s arrival is combined with the presence of Giovanni Reyna while Immanuel Pherai is also making some waves in the youth levels. It all adds up and strengthens BVB’s creative unit, meaning the chances of Gomez making a breakthrough at Dortmund are minimal.
A move away from Westphalia, therefore, makes sense for all parties involved and hopefully, the young midfielder can regain his true potential by calling an end to his miserable spell in Germany.
