According to Phil Hay, Leeds United could sign at least two more players this summer, following the arrival of Rodrigo and Robin Koch closing in on his move to Elland Road. The Athletic journalist claims Marcelo Bielsa is looking for a new number ten or a winger and another centre-back as the Whites look to finish preparing themselves for the Premier League challenge ahead.
In this article, we will talk about the players Bielsa should go for, in those said positions, with the Argentine tactician ready to conclude his transfer activity this summer.
Winger/Number Ten
Leeds United deserve plaudits for investing heavily in their youth department this summer. But as far as the first-team is concerned, they have only signed Rodrigo in a record deal while both Jack Harrison and Helder Costa will remain at Elland Road, with the latter joining from Wolves permanently.
The Whites do have a decent amount of depth, but given the lack of top-level experience of most of these individuals, Bielsa could use another option, and that is where Ollie Watkins could be a smart choice.
Although the Brentford striker has no experience in the Premier League, he is equipped with the ideal characteristics that could help him thrive under Bielsa.
His physical prowess, combined with his productivity, in particular, should add more bite into Leeds’ attacking setup. Also, Watkins can provide tactical versatility as he can feature anywhere across the final third, thus making him an ideal option for the newly-promoted Premier League outfit.
Centre Back
Leeds United must find a viable replacement for Ben White this summer if they are to have any hopes of maintaining their Premier League status for the long run.
Bielsa’s team have been linked with a move for Rob Holding of Arsenal, who might not be a bad option for the Whites. The Englishman does lack technical quality and has a poor injury record. But, with Koch likely to arrive from SC Freiburg, it can be assumed that the German will be responsible for most of the build-up play from the back.
Holding, in that regard, with his imposing frame and a robust style of play, should provide excellent back-up for Liam Cooper. Not to mention, the Arsenal star might even push the Leeds captain to fight harder for a place in the starting lineup next season.
A more cost-effective option in Leeds’ bid to further strengthening their defensive unit, is Hjortur Hermannsson of Brondby. The Icelandic centre-back has the quality to thrive at Elland Road and won’t cost as much as Holding. He does, however, lack experience in the Premier League.
