According to Sport Bild, as cited by Fussball Transfers, Bayern have backed away from their desire to sell Jerome Boateng. Although the newly crowned European champions will not offer any contract extension to the defender, whose term at Bavaria expires in summer 2021, the player will be given the full right to decide his future. In this article, we will discuss three reasons why Jerome Boateng must stay at Bayern Munich next season.
Bayern Munich Still Need Depth
After landing a historic treble, Bayern Munich will once again go all out for the titles next season in what will be Hansi Flick’s first full season in charge of the club.
However, the German tactician must retain some amount of depth in his squad in order to deal with injuries. Especially in the defensive department, the Bavarians have often struggled with injuries of key players like Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard in the recent season.
Boateng’s presence in the side, therefore, could help Bayern Munich come better prepared ahead of the new season. Not to mention, the German can always be used as a first-team option, thus adding an incentive for other defenders to fight harder for a place in the starting eleven.
Tactical Difficulties
It is needless to say that Bayern Munich have been lucky with the emergence of Alphonso Davies. Also, David Alaba has done incredibly well in settling into a central defensive role.
However, they can’t rely on these two players, both playing in an unnatural position, forever. While Flick does have options like Sule, and Hernandez, one of them has struggled with a long injury layoff while the other has simply failed to settle into the Bundesliga.
Elsewhere, Pavard is a right-back who is unlikely to return to his centre-back duties while Javi Martinez has been linked with a move away from Allianz Arena. It leaves Boateng as a key member of the first-team.
He is the most experienced defender left
Speaking of Martinez, his departure will also leave Boateng as the only remaining experienced defender at Bayern Munich. Although the likes of Alaba and Manuel Neuer have significant experience at the highest level of football, the Bavarians could miss the leadership and composure of the ex-Man City star.
In fact, one of the reasons why Boateng shouldn’t leave Bayern is because his quality has barely dipped, at least under Flick. So apart from his pace, the German World Cup winner is more than capable of becoming an asset for the Bundesliga giants in the upcoming season.
