According to L’Equipe, as cited by Daily Mail, Houssem Aouar has emerged as the latest target for Arsenal. The Gunners are willing to sponsor a swap deal that would see Matteo Guendouzi switching to Olympique Lyon in exchange for Aouar moving the other way. However, Arsenal could face stiff competition from European giants like Juventus and Manchester City in the pursuit of the talented midfielder.
Unplayable With The Ball
Aouar has been one of the key members of Lyon’s incredible Champions League run that saw them reach the semi-final, only to be beaten by finalists, Bayern Munich.
One of the reasons why the Frenchman has impressed the onlookers is his sheer quality on the ball. In fact, he has appeared almost unplayable in possession, at times, as he can effortlessly glide past the opposition with neat footwork.
Such ability to carry the ball has aided Lyon in dealing with a strong press, although they did find it difficult to evade Bayern’s outrageously high and aggressive press in the semis.
Aouar’s technical qualities have been evident even in Ligue 1, with the 22-year-old attaining an 85% pass completion rate as well as 66 successful dribbles, fifth highest in the league and higher than any other central midfielder.
An All-Round Star
Aouar’s features are not only restricted to the technical aspect of the game, however. While it is certainly his strongest asset, the Frenchman has also earned quite a reputation due to his tenacity and willingness to win back possession for his team.
Aouar’s hard-working nature has been evident in his performances in the Champions League as he had created a formidable midfield trifecta alongside Maxence Caqueret and Bruno Guimaraes. The understanding between these three individuals was key in helping Les Gones build a strong second line of press. It is also indicative of the team-player that is Aouar.
Here’s How He Could Boost Arsenal
At Arsenal, Aouar could become an asset with his all-round gameplay, especially under Mikel Arteta’s tactical setup that has given a lot of room for technically astute midfielders to dictate themselves in the middle of the park. It was evident in Dani Ceballos’ form during the second half of the campaign.
The Frenchman, in that regard, could replace his Spanish counterpart and become a key component in Arsenal’s double-pivot, alongside Granit Xhaka. He could even eclipse the Real Madrid star as the 22-year-old has already shown far greater determination and link-up play.
However, it will, no doubt, be difficult for Arsenal to get their hands on Aouar, who is unlikely to settle for Europa League, especially after Lyon’s fantastic run in the Champions League this term. Manchester City or Juventus, in that regard, seem much more logical options.
