According to a recent report by The Daily Star, Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff is subject of interest from Germany as Schalke 04 have joined the chase to acquire his services this summer. The same source has also stated that the German club will face stiff competition from Udinese in pursuit of the Magpies youngster, who is frustrated after playing a bit part role at St. James’ Park this season.
Longstaff’s Campaign Of Mixed Emotions At Tyneside
Longstaff has managed to break out as a first-team starter at Tyneside this season, but has struggled to earn regular playing minutes in the Premier League. He has participated in 16 matches for the Magpies this term, scoring three goals across all competitions which showcases his impressive rise in English football over the past ten months.
The Rotherham-born talent has received a total of 1083 minutes of playing time and has averaged 0.6 interceptions, 0.4 shots and 0.3 dribbles per game in league football (stats via whoscored). His stats have been far from convincing so far. However, he has shown signs of promise and could end up becoming a household name at Newcastle if he can continue to improve himself with each season.
Longstaff has also represented England at the Under-20 level, having made two appearances for them so far. However, he still has a long way to go before he is ready to be in contention for a place in Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.
What Are The English Midfield Ace’s Best Strengths?
Longstaff can read the game well that allows him to make a few crucial interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He can also strike the ball with a lot of power and showcases excellent balance when running with the ball in the opposition half. However, his all-around game is still a bit rough around the edges, so Steve Bruce would need to be patient if he wants to get the best out of him in the coming seasons.
Should The Magpies Let Matty Longstaff Leave This Summer?
Unless the Magpies can bring in a quality midfielder when the transfer window reopens later this month, they cannot afford to lose any of their current assets. Longstaff has matured as a footballer during this campaign, so the Toon Army will hope that the best is yet to come from him at Tyneside. He is currently a useful squad player at St. James’ Park and has the potential to become a regular starter for the Magpies someday.
Therefore, Bruce should consider retaining his services for at least another season by agreeing on a new short-term contract with the player. Longstaff’s current deal with his boyhood club is set to expire at the end of this month, so the Magpies should think about finding a way to convince the player to stay beyond this summer.
