According to The Athletic, as cited by Sky Sports, Manchester United are interested in Kingsley Coman. The Bayern Munich winger has emerged as a potential alternative to their pursuit of top target Jadon Sancho. In fact, the Red Devils have also been in contact with the player regarding a move to Old Trafford this summer.
Coman’s Importance at Bayern
Since his loan move to FC Bayern back in 2015, Coman has indeed been an asset for the club. Although his initial progress was marred by a series of injuries, including a syndesmotic ligament tear in 2017, the Frenchman has never really failed to impress with his performances on the pitch.
Indeed, Coman has notched up 158 competitive appearances for Bayern Munich, during which, he has been involved in 67 goals. It is a rather impressive statistic, especially given the fact he had to compete with the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery for most of his career. And for a good reason, Coman was always identified as a protege for those individuals.
The 24-year-old was involved in eight goals in 24 matches during the 2019/20 campaign. But, his on-field contributions were far greater as he offered pace and trickery on the flanks that made life infinitely more difficult for the opposition. His determination also added another dimension in the final third.
Why Bayern Must Keep Hold Of Coman
There is no doubt regarding the fact that Coman’s progression at Bayern has been overshadowed by the rapid rise of Serge Gnabry as well as the rejuvenation of Thomas Muller under Hansi Flick. While the recent arrival of Leroy Sane may raise question marks over the winger’s future, Bayern Munich must keep hold of him for multiple reasons.
First and foremost, the Bavarians are set to lose out on the services of Philippe Coutinho this summer. The Brazilian international has never really managed to make an impact in the Bundesliga, but his departure should create a massive hole in the creative department nonetheless. That is combined with the struggles of Ivan Perisic, who has also fallen down the pecking order.
The trifecta of Coman, Sane and Gnabry, therefore, could build the foundation of Bayern Munich’s next-generation attack as the Bundesliga giants look to undergo a smooth transition under Flick.
