According to a recent report by Goal, Manchester City are inching closer towards finalising move for Valencia winger Ferran Torres this summer. The same source has also stated that the Citizens are yet to agree on a fee with the Spanish club, but the expectation is that Torres’ price-tag would be somewhere between £27m and £36m, with the potential for add-ons. It is understood that the Spanish playmaker has agreed to personal terms on a five-year contract with Pep Guardiola’s side with his current deal at the Mestalla Stadium set to run out at the end of next season (via Goal).
Torres’ Spectacular Season At The Mestalla
The 20-year-old has enjoyed an impressive season with Valencia and has been responsible for producing a series of eye-catching performances on the right side of Albert Celades’ attack. He has featured in 44 matches for the La Liga outfit this term, scoring six goals and providing eight assists on all fronts which sheds light on his incredible impact in the decisive end of the field.
The Spanish youngster has done well to average 1.1 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Spanish top tier and the UEFA Champions League this season. However, he needs to work on improving his ball-distribution as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 78.4% in league football in the recently concluded La Liga campaign (stats via whoscored).
Torres has played for Spain at various youth levels but is still waiting to represent his country at the senior stage. Maybe a switch the Etihad Stadium this summer could offer him a chance to showcase his talents at the highest level so that he can secure a place in Luis Enrique’s squad for next year’s UEFA European Championship finals.
What Will The Spanish Starlet Bring To The North-West Of England?
Torres can use his pace and agility to complete a few dangerous dribbles out on the wide areas. He can read the game well and is proficient at getting himself into some promising positions in and around the opposition penalty area. The Spaniard can also whip in some pin-point crosses into the danger area which explains how he picked up eight assists last season. However, the Valencia wonderkid’s game is still a bit rough around the edges, so Guardiola would need to be patient with his development if he wants to see the best out of him in the coming seasons.
Will Torres Be A Good Fit For The Citizens?
Acquiring the services of a winger of Torres’ attacking potential will be a brilliant coup for Man City in the long-run. He will not only bring more creativity and goals to the Etihad Stadium but also improve the overall depth of Guardiola’s squad.
Furthermore, he will provide some much-needed competition for the likes of Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden in the race to secure a regular starting berth in Guardiola’s first-team next season. The Spanish wing wizard could also serve as an ideal replacement for Leroy Sane which is why the Citizens should try everything they can to agree on a fee to bring him to Manchester this summer.
With all things considered, Torres ticks all the right boxes in terms of what it takes to be effective in Guardiola’s possession-based system, so he will be an excellent fit for Man City ahead of the new season.
