Tottenham Hotspur registered yet another hard-fought win in the Premier League, this time against Newcastle United, securing a 3-1 victory at St. James’ Park. Although the scoreline may suggest otherwise, the Lilywhites were really made to work hard for their win as Matt Ritchie’s powerful strike in the second half nullified Son Heung-Min’s first-half opener.
Spurs did, however, make a swift comeback through Harry Kane’s goal in the 60th minute before the striker doubled his tally and sealed all three points for his side by scoring a late goal.
Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings Vs Newcastle United
Hugo Lloris 5/10
Newcastle United managed to churn out dozens of attempts on goal and even shared a lot of possession. However, they never really managed to force Hugo Lloris into making a save, aside from the Ritchie goal.
Serge Aurier 6/10
Played through the entirety of the game despite having his brother murdered a few days ago. Showed excellent professionalism, although he may have done a little better defensively.
Davinson Sanchez 7.5/10
Davinson Sanchez produced a commendable defensive display this evening. He was involved in several defensive actions, including when he put his body on the line to block Miguel Almiron’s shot wide.
Toby Alderweireld 7/10
Toby Alderweireld’s composure and experience simply add new elements to Tottenham’s defensive game. The Belgian once again provided that against Newcastle United this evening.
Ben Davies 6.5/10
A mixed game for Ben Davies, who stuck to his tactical task of providing balance on the opposite flank. But, he looked incompetent in terms of 1v1 duels.
Moussa Sissoko 6.5/10
Moussa Sissoko was quite useful when Newcastle United had possession due to his tenacity and willingness to win back the ball for his team. However, he becomes a liability in Tottenham’s possession phase due to his lack of technical prowess. Spurs definitely need an upgrade.
Giovani Lo Celso 6.5/10
Giovani Lo Celso’s slight decline in form has been evident now as the Argentine once again failed to rekindle his early 2020 form. He was unable to provide any significant impact in the final third aside from the assist and was taken off around the hour mark.
Harry Winks 7/10
It was yet another stable display from Harry Winks in the middle of the park. Although the Englishman may have done a better job with his tackles, he provided the assurance in the possession phase.
Lucas Moura 7.5/10
Lucas Moura didn’t have a bad game by any means. In fact, the Brazilian showed excellent zest in winning back possession and providing creative support to his teammates. Unfortunately, he was taken off in the second half due to a possible knock.
Harry Kane 8/10
A responsible performance from Harry Kane, who showed exactly what he is capable of. The English international was useful with his trackbacks and linked up well, ultimately delivering two excellent finishes to help Spurs seal all three points.
Son Heung-Min 7.5/10
Son Heung-Min was a constant threat for the Newcastle United defence with his clever movements and swift dribbles. But more importantly, the South Korean international produced a superb finish to score the all-important opener in the first-half, although his shot was deflected off a Newcastle defender.
SUBSTITUTES
Steven Bergwijn 7/10
Replaced Lucas in the 57th minute and provided an excellent cross to feed Kane for his first goal of the evening. However, that was his only notable contribution.
Erik Lamela 6.5/10
Erik Lamela barely made an impact after replacing Lo Celso after the hour-mark. But, the Argentine attacker deserves credit for somehow managing a shot that led to Kane’s second goal.
Jan Vertonghen N/A
A late replacement for Kane, who picked up a late knock while scoring the goal.
