Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Southampton tonight, as the away side completely dominated proceedings throughout the fixture. A majority of the Toffees’ attacking play came on the counter-attack, and they were perhaps fortunate not to concede more than just once. James Ward-Prowse missed a penalty in the first-half before top scorer Danny Ings eventually broke the deadlock a few minutes later. It took a special ball from Lucas Digne into Richarlison to create the Everton goal. Despite pressure from either team, the scoreline remained 1-1 till the full-time whistle blew at the end of the tie.
Here Are The Everton Player Ratings Vs Southampton:
Everton Player Ratings Vs Southampton
Jordan Pickford – 6.5
Should’ve probably stayed on his line before the Saints opener tonight, but he more than made up for it with his efforts over the fixture. Made some top saves and released the ball quickly too.
Seamus Coleman – 6
The defender played either half of that fixture in different positions, as Ancelotti switched to a back three to try and affect the tie. Covered his man well but wasn’t able to get forward in the first half.
Yerry Mina – 6.5
The big defender was the first to several aerial balls played into the box by Southampton tonight. Didn’t have the most comfortable outing though, as Danny Ings gave him a pretty torrid time.
Michael Keane – 5.5
The Englishman looked a little bit off the pace of the fixture right from the start, and he made a couple of silly fouls in dangerous positions as well. Needed to get a touch on the assist that fed Ings.
Lucas Digne – 7.5
The little Frenchman was on top of his game tonight as he was the catalyst to a majority of the Everton attacks. Played some good crosses into the box and picked out Richarlison in great style.
Alex Iwobi – 5
Apart from a couple of quality touches, the former Arsenal man had next to no impact on the fixture tonight. Was rightly hauled off at half-time by Ancelotti, as he was the victim of the formation change.
Andre Gomes – 5
The former Barcelona man didn’t have his most influential display in the middle of the park tonight as Southampton won the midfield battle in the first half. Came off injured a few minutes before half-time.
Tom Davies – 6
The midfielder wasn’t able to control the tempo of the game from the core of the side like he prefers to, and was instead required to do a lot of tracking back. He helped in defence efficiently though.
Anthony Gordon – 7
The youngster was a breath of fresh air in the middle of the park for the Toffees, as he linked up superbly with Lucas Digne down that side. Showed adventure and a desire to get forward on every occasion.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 6
The striker picked up some right positions all through the fixture but wasn’t able to impact the tie in the manner that he would’ve liked. Positioned himself well and was perhaps unlucky to be taken off.
Richarlison – 7
The young Brazilian put himself about in the Southampton final third and didn’t allow the Saints’ centre-halves too much rest. Collected the Digne pass perfectly before expertly slotting past McCarthy.
Substitutes
Gylfi Sigurdsson – 6
The Iceland international was thrown on as a first-half replacement for the injured Andre Gomes. Played some excellent passes in midfield, but didn’t create too much in the final third of the pitch.
Djibril Sidibé – 6.5
Ancelotti introduced the speedster at half-time as part of a formation change. Tried to bombard forward on every opportunity and added some much-needed energy in attack.
Moise Kean – 6
Took some good touches in the opposition box, but didn’t show the conviction required to kill the game off at any point. Needs to improve on his positioning in the final third.
Bernard – NA
Didn’t have time to make an impact.
