According to a recent report by the Scottish Sun, Premiership giants Rangers have been tipped to reignite their interest in former Leeds United striker Kemar Roofe ahead of next season, if their Colombian forward Alfredo Morelos, departs in the upcoming summer window. It is suggested that the Gers had made an approach to acquire the prolific forward from the Elland Road club last summer as well, but that the player instead chose to move to the Belgian top-flight to join Anderlecht in a deal worth around £7m.
The report has clarified that Rangers are interested in Kemar Roofe, but that the avenue will only open up for Gerrard if their current first-choice Morelos, does choose to leave the Ibrox in the summer. In such a situation, the Gers are said to be considering the possibility of luring the Anderlecht striker to Glasgow ahead of next season. It has been claimed in the report that there are several English and other European clubs that have been looking at Morelos and that even Qatari outfit Al-Duhail have been tempted by the £15m-rated striker.
What Has Alfredo Morelos Contributed To Rangers This Season?
The Colombian forward has been a fan-favourite around the Ibrox club for a couple of seasons now, and his contributions in the final third of the pitch highlight why Morelos has been held in such high regard by the fans and management alike.
The striker featured in 26 Premiership appearances for the Gers this season – a period during which he managed to notch up 12 goals and a further three assists. Although that does look like an appealing return, the fact remains that the Colombian had been far from his best during the second part of the Premiership campaign.
What Makes Kemar Roofe An Attractive Option For Rangers?
The 27-year-old Jamaican international striker was at Leeds United for three full seasons before the switch to Belgium last summer. In his final year at Elland Road, Roofe was singlehandedly responsible for Marcelo Bielsa’s men achieving the heights that they did. The forward was a solid physical presence leading the line for the Whites all through the campaign, and his return of 14 goals and two assists were crucial as well. Having been touted to join a flurry of top European clubs, the forward eventually chose Belgian giants Anderlecht.
Branding his move to the Jupiler League as a success would be overstating things, and this is likely the reason why Gerrard has chosen the Jamaican as a viable target. The forward suffered two unfortunate injuries within the last year, which has seriously eaten into his playing time at the Belgian side. Roofe only returned to the first-team picture after an ankle problem in the middle of September, after which he picked up an unfortunate calf injury again in January. Despite this, the former Leeds ace managed to clock in 13 fixtures for his new club, from which he produced six foals and two assists.
Rangers Are Interested In Kemar Roofe: Why He Would Be The Ideal Morelos Replacement For Gerrard
Alfredo Morelos showcased a certain degree of inconsistency during the second half of last season, and that could be enough to convince Gerrard to cash in during the summer. The fact that his sale could help bring in around £15m will come as a bonus to the Gers, who will likely only need to spend around half of that to acquire Kemar Roofe. The Jamaican has proven during his time at Elland Road that he has the physical attributes required to flourish in the gritty nature of British football. Given everything that’s on the line in Scotland next season, the addition of a top striker like Roofe would undoubtedly go a long way for the Ibrox club.
