According to the Argentine journalist, Nicolas Bozza, Leeds United are closing in on Juan Foyth. The Tottenham Hotspur defender is set to become their first signing of the upcoming summer transfer window as Marcelo Bielsa looks to bolster his defensive options. Bozza claims that Foyth will join Leeds United on a loan deal this summer following a disappointing 2019/20 campaign under Jose Mourinho.
In this article, we will talk about three reasons why Foyth could be a valuable signing for the Whites next season.
A Replacement for Ben White?
One of the major problems Leeds United are facing at the moment is the uncertain future of Ben White. The Brighton & Hove Albion defender was signed on loan last summer, and he ended up enjoying a phenomenal campaign, becoming an integral part of the Leeds’ backline.
However, White is set to return to Brighton & Hove Albion following the end of his loan spell in the summer. Although the Whites are trying to secure his services permanently, the defender has already attracted the interest of a host of top clubs including Liverpool.
The addition of Foyth, in that regard, should provide Bielsa with some much-needed depth in the defensive department. The Argentine international could be considered as an alternative or perhaps even a replacement for the Brighton centre-back.
A Versatile Individual
As mentioned earlier, Foyth should provide Bielsa with an additional defensive option at his disposal. But, the Tottenham star can also offer a lot of versatility in the same department.
In fact, Foyth can play in three defensive positions, including the centre-back, right-back and the holding midfield role. That means he can not only provide cover for White and Liam Cooper at CB but can also compete with Luke Ayling at right-back.
Especially at RB, Bielsa does not have any reliable option aside from Ayling. The addition of Foyth, in that regard, should give the Leeds United star an added incentive to fight for his place in the first-team next season.
Finally, the Argentine can be considered as a backup for Kalvin Phillips at CDM, which should give Bielsa a massive boost in terms of squad rotations.
Experience and Tactical Compatibility
What makes Foyth such an appealing target for Leeds United is his technical prowess. The defender can effortlessly rotate possession and read the game which should add a new element to Leeds’ build-up play. Phillips, in particular, could be hugely helped by the presence of the Spurs star in central defence.
Moreover, Foyth has played in the Premier League and is also an Argentine international. That means he is fairly experienced at the highest level of football which should be useful as the Whites brace themselves for their highly-anticipated return to the English top-flight next season.
